Destination Guide : Salzburg

Sounding out Salzburg
Why go on holiday to Salzburg?
It's set amongst lovely mountains, a river runs through it, it's picturesque and it's home to majestic castles and palaces, quaint houses and many churches and monasteries.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe and the gothic-style St. Sebastian is a truly impressive church. It's also a city of music: after all it's the birthplace of musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (and the setting for that somewhat less classically recognised masterpiece The Sound Of Music). Aside from its historical and cultural heritage it's a buzzing town all year round and you can make the most of its café culture, its lovely coffee and lush pastries.

How much will it cost?
A two-night stay in a four star hotel double room costs from £105 per night; a night in a budget hotel room without breakfast costs from £54 per night; a low-cost flight with Ryanair costs about £30 return.

When should I go?
It's an all-year town but the best time to enjoy Austria's mountains and cultural offerings is between May and November, especially in October when there are fewer tourists.

Who's it for?
Salzburg is a musical heaven – for all kinds of music fans. You can't get away from Mozart memories: museums, café's and even chocolates are dedicated to him. It's also a must for the many fans of The Sound Of Music, made in 1965, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and a favourite ever since.

There are a variety of cheesy tours which offer the chance to visit that nunnery, 'climb every mountain' and visit virtually ever building/background used in the film. Fans will even get the chance to do the 'nun run' screeching The Hills Are Alive.

Salzburg also offers a variety of rock and clubbing venues for those who aren't Mozart or musical fans. It's for those who love the café culture –a range of teas, coffees, drinks and sumptuous pastries are on offer. It's also got all those beautiful buildings, winding streets and superb gardens – it's easily accessible and it's close to Munich.

What will I spend?
A three-course meal without wine £35; £6 to visit the Brauwelt (Europe's largest beer exhibition) and £7 for a box of Mozart chocolates. The Salzburg Card, which costs £14, £18.50 and £22.50 for 24, 48 and 72 hours (half price for children), gives you access to transport and the city's attractions.

Any special events?
Salzburg has a rich cultural program which offers 4,000 events all year round. Mozart Week ushers in the new musical year in January to be followed by the Easter, Whitsun and Summer Salzburg Festivals and the International Jazz Festival in November

Salzburg Christmas Market is held until the 24th of December in Cathedral and Residentz Squares in the Old Town.

Salzburg's captivation with Mozart is perhaps best reflected in the world-famous Salzburg Festival , a five-week celebration of opera, orchestral music and theatre that begins in late July, although there's a wide range of (not always Mozart-related) musical events on offer throughout the year.
