We went to San lucar de barameda at a very busy time the first two weeks of August. There was lots on such as the horse racing on the beach and the parade for the holy madonna. It is an authentic Spanish town. If you do not speak spanish be prepared for lots of miming as they do not speak English here, not that I expected them to, this did add to the adventure and a few comedy moments. The people were helpful friendly the food good but beware what you order, if you are squeemish. If you hire a car it can be problem to find parking especially when you are in the old town. We got towed during the festival although unlike in London we did not get charged, which says a lot about the spanish attitude to life, GOOD.

Sanlucar de Barrameda is a delightful, busy Spanish town. The locals do not speak English so do take a phrase book and small dictionary with you. Pay a visit to the National Park of Donana. You can travel on a boat trip from Sanlucar which takes just over 3 hours. Tickets for the trip can be booked at the Fabrica de Hielo at the end of Bajo de Guia. There are wonderful birds to see if you are interested in birdwatching which we are - raptors like eagles and black kites, also storks, bee-eaters, flamingoes etc. The Martin Miguel golf course is good - quite long and challenging but our golfers enjoyed it. You also receive a discount if staying in a villa on the Club de Campo. Sanlucar's citizens are very friendly and helpful. The one-way traffic system can be a little confusing but the centre of town is charming with delightful cafes and market stalls. The daily food market is amazing with fantastic fish and seafood stalls. There is also a fabulous array of fruit and vegetables. The weather is wonderful. During our stay the sun shone in a cloudless blue sky every day. Sanlucar is only a short drive away from Cadiz or Jerez. You can cross from El Puerte de Santa Maria to Cadiz on the ferry. A trip up to Sevilla is a must. It takes one and a half hours to drive there and a visitor should see the Cathedral, the largest in Europe; the Giralda or tower of the cathedral with its panoramic views over the city; the Palace of Alcazar and its beautiful, fragrant gardens and the immense Plaza de Espana. If you want to find an unspoilt, friendly location away from the concrete jungles that some Spanish resorts have become, then Sanlucar de Barrameda is highly recommended. I will most certainly be returning there in the future!
