Language Italian and Sardo
Visas UK citizens do not require a visa but should carry a passport.
Getting there There are direct charter flights to Sardinia, and scheduled flights via Milan or Rome. A large number of ferries operates between Sardinia and the Italian mainland.
Flying time from London Two hours 30 minutes direct, or three hours 10 minutes with an hour layover.
Getting around The island has an extensive range of bus and train networks but the most remote parts can only be reached by car. Buses are generally faster and more frequent than trains.

Costs Prices are similar to the mainland, expect to pay roughly: litre of petrol 65p; small beer £2.50; moderate restaurant meal £7-£12; roll of film £2.50-£3.20; four-mile taxi ride £8-£10.
Weather Long, hot dry summers (20-31C/68-88F). Winters are mild with temperatures rarely falling below 10C (50F), except in the mountainous areas where it is rainy and can even snow. Warm weather continues from May to October but the sirocco (a hot wind from Africa) can produce stifling conditions in August.
Time difference One hour ahead of GMT. Daylight saving time is observed during the summer months.

Voltage 220V, 50Hz. Plugs have two or three round pins and some power points have larger holes than others. Take an adaptor with you.
Opening hours Museums are open daily except Monday. Tourist Offices are also open daily. Post Offices are open Monday to Friday from 8am to at least 5pm. Shops often close in the heat of the afternoon.
Health - Before you go No jabs necessary. Take an EHIC form, obtainable from UK post offices, to cover any medical treatment in Sardinia.
Health - When you are there For any medical treatment go to the Ospedale Civile in Cagliari (Tel. 070 609 22 67) or in Alghero (Tel. 079 99 62 33).
Warnings Ferry routes between Sardinia and the mainland are always in great demand. Make sure you book well in advance, especially if you want a sleeper.

Customs In the interior of Sardinia, some people still wear traditional costumes and shepherds live in isolation. They are very hospitable, but can be easily offended if they sense any lack of respect.
Pets Italy qualifies for the Pet Travel Scheme for dogs and cats. You must obtain the necessary veterinary certificates at least six months before you go. See your vet for details.
Tipping Not compulsory, but you may leave a 10% tip if no service charge is included.
