Getting there Several daily flights to Stockholm Arlanda airport, half an hour from the city centre by Flygbuss. Fly from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Getting around The Stockholm underground, the tunnelbana, has three lines to get you to most parts of the city. Bus routes are complicated and confusing, but handy for outlying places. Local trains are best for getting to the ferry port. Taxis are plentiful but expensive while cyclists are well catered-for with a wide network of paths.

Costs Pint of beer £2.50-£4, litre of petrol 75p, three-course meal with half bottle of wine £20-£30, roll of camera film £3, four-mile taxi ride about £7. All prices vary.
Weather Summer can be warm, sunny and beautiful - especially June and July with temperatures around 17C/63F. August is warm but sometimes rainy. Winter is cold - temperatures fall below zero - and dark.

Opening hours Banks usually open 9.30am-3pm, or 5/6pm in the centre. Shops open 9.30am-6pm weekdays and till 2/3pm on Saturday. Lunch begins at 11am and is over by 2pm in restaurants. Stockholm has many 24-hour shops.
Health - Before you go You don't need any vaccinations. To obtain free healthcare, take an EHIC form with you (available from UK post offices).
Health - When you are there If you need care and you have an EHIC form, see doctors affiliated with the public insurance scheme. For information and refunds go to the local Social Insurance Offices - the Lokala Forsakringskassan.
Warnings Sweden is one of the most crime-free countries in the world, but Stockholm does have some drug problems and the occasional neo-Nazi activities; take the usual big-city precautions.

Customs Swedes enjoy boisterous drinking sessions but these rarely end in socially disturbing behaviour, which is considered not funny and unacceptable.

Tipping A tip is not expected if there's a service charge on the bill, but leaving a handful of change is quite common. In taxis round up the tariff if you can.
