There is an international airport at Strasbourg served by regular flights from London. Rail and road links from the rest of France are excellent.

Buses and trams are modern, clean and efficient. Daily and weekly travel cards are a bargain, but a more fun way of getting about is to hire a bike (there is a great network of cycling paths) or even an electric car.

Litre of petrol 80p; glass of beer £2.20; modest restaurant meal £6; roll of camera film £2.50; four-mile taxi ride: £5.50 from 7pm-7am. All prices will vary.

Health - Before you go
No vaccinations required. Take an EHIC form with you (available from all UK post offices) to cover any medical treatment you may need.

Health - When you are there
There are no health risks, and the tap water is safe to drink. For medical emergencies, go to the Hopital Civil at 1 Place de L'Hopital.

Warnings
Keep away from the Neuhof area on the outskirts of the city, particularly at night. Book accommodation in advance if travelling during the one week of every month when the European Parliament is in session.

Customs
There's a strong tradition of Christmas in Strasbourg - hence the Christmas Market - and on December 6, St Nicholas parades around the town.

Pets
Pets may visit France and return to the UK without the need for quarantine, under the government's new Pet Travel Scheme. See your vet well in advance for further information - this can take some time to set up.

Tipping
There's a 10%-15% service charge in restaurants and hotels. Taxi tip is 70 cents to one euro (about 50-60p), whatever the fare.
