Taormina is a beautiful town perched on a hilltop. There were fabulous views of snow-capped Mount Etna as we visited in March. Although it is popular with tourists, it was not too crowded at this time of the year. Its reputation is well deserved as it has a lot to offer; historical sites such as the Teatro Greco, the Giardino Pubblico with its beautiful flowers, pretty squares and quaint little streets. There are plenty of shops catering for all tastes, the goods are laid out very enticingly in the windows. It is expensive to have a drink in the bars/cafes in the prime locations but well worth treating yourself at least once because the views of Mount Etna and the coastline are truly stunning. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. There is a good bus service from Giardini Naxos. I would thoroughly reccommend visiting Taormina and making the region the base for your holiday in Sicily.

Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Giardini-Naxos/Taormina. The Town of Taormina is stunning - a hill top castle provides a focal point as the town spreads down the hill towards the beaches on the coast. The cable car links the two, and is fun for the family! There are stunning views of the coast and Mt Etna, and the main street and Piazzas are buzzing with life - both tourists and locals. There are a multitude of places to eat, many hidden away down little alleys and stairways, some with suprising terraces overlooking the town and the sea. The stroll up to the theatre is worthwhile, both for the site itself and the dramatic display of tourist tack available in the shops! The beaches are pleasant, particularly the spectacular Isola Bella with it's waveswept sandbar leading to the island, and a mix of pebbles and sand.
The wider area has a lot to offer, with Catania food and fish market our favourite, with Syracusa coming a close second. The inland offers some interesting historical and natural sites, including the omnipresent Etna, and driving around the mountain roads offer hidden views at every corner.
To sum up the area I'd have to mention the friendly people, the tasty food, the stunning scenery and the awe-inspiring Etna - well worth a visit, even out of season.
