Review by Wendy Leaver (Rigby group) from Downham Market

Tavira was a spectacular place, I have had so many foreign holidays but nothing in the past has compared with Tavira.   The beaches were out of this world, how different to get on a boat or a train to find the sand and sea after the salt lakes.  Wonderful.    The nightlife was just right, not too loud and plenty of bars to sit and drink and watch the world go by.  We found all the staff in the bars were very friendly and helpful.  I particularly loved the statutes on the bridges at night, it brought back many happy memories for me.  I certainly hope to go back another year.

Tavira was very quiet in the daytime, but by 9:00 in the evening it was very busy. Packed with bars and restaurants, from the basic seaside town menu through to top class restaurant food for very reasonable prices.

Near enough to the border of Spain for a day trip, and in a location that is near to mountains or the beach, so you have the best of both worlds

This is our 4th visit and it will definately not be the last! The town is both traditional and unspoilt. The Portugese people are friendly and you will be spolit for choice when dining out as there are many restaurants to choose from, some in the historic old town and several alongside the river which runs through the middle of the town. There are many historic buildings worth visiting and the square is a must for morning coffee or afternoon tea, accompanied by rather nice cakes! A boat trip to the beach makes a good day out and again the restaurants there serve fantastic food especially fresh fish -- not to be missed. The local train delivers you to Faro for a few euros and makes an interesting trip; go on it in the opposite direction and 30 minutes fron Tavira you will find yourself at the Spanish border. Nice for a few Tapas for lunch!

Review by Janey Archer from Johnshaven

Tavira is a great place for adults and families wanting to avoid the usual beach holiday resorts. The island beach is fantastic and has great scenery, sand and facilities with a pleasant cheap boat trip to and from the town. We found it a joy to be out in the evening in the town watching the locals watching us. There was no sign of any overindulgence, indeed it was interesting to see most folk drinking coffee and eating ice cream late at night. A brand new shopping center (including C&A's) meant shopa holics are well catered for but it is pricey given the euro exchange rate and even then local prices are high (petrol, was 1.26 euros a gall whilst we were there) food was about the same as in the UK, alcohol cheap) people very friendly. Restaurants okay (patio restaurant was our favorite with a very high standard of food presentation.

Excellent place to visit although 10 nights was just enough. Great value for money as the weather was superb. Flight is only a short one as well which is great as we have a young family but if you want loud and lively it's not the place to be.

Review by Sean Skinnader from Emyvale, Co Monaghan, Ireland

Tavira is an unspoilt town with loads of interesting buildings and the town pavillion along the river looks fantastic at night. The local festivals had great atmosphere and the live music / singers were excellent, enough to get you you in the mood to go out and dance with the locals.

The restaurants along the the river are of an excelent standard and fresh fish of all descriptions is a must try for anyone visiting, I'm only sorry we didnt go to them sooner to try all they had to offer with excellent value for money.

The shops offer a lot of holiday mementoes at very reasonable prices and there is something for everone with the variety of shops along the river and in the market square.

Tavira is a town where you can go to each day and find something new and exciting.

Very pleasant town unspoilt by commercialisation.

Review by Glenis Palmer from Wednesbury

Tavira is a very old scenic small Portuguese city situated in the Eastern Algarve on the Rio Galeo within 20 minutes of small quiet beach. Unlike the Western Algarve the terrain is less harsh and more suited to people who find steep roads and paths difficult.

With mountains to the rear of the city and the Rio Formosa salt beds leading to the sea, the area is awash with wildlife nestling amongst ancient remains.

Tavira has many places to discover such as the old churches and castle ruins. The amphitheatre located in the town centre was in the evening a great place to relax after a meal and watch the evenings entertainment be it musical or dancing. You can view the town on the road train or in a horse drawn carriage and the tourist office offer many trips to other towns i.e waterparks in Faro. The food was very nice and very reasonably priced.

We found Tavira to be a very pleasant and friendly town with lots to see. The transport was excellent with the train and bus stations close by, The taxi service was friendly and reliable. The majority of local bussines people speak very good English. There are lots of very reasonalbly priced restaurantsin the town which all seemed to be child friendly. All round good town fo a relaxing family holliday.
