Travel Guides: All Countries / Europe / Spain / Costa Blanca - Alicante / Orihuela - Torrevieja / Torrevieja

Destination Guide : Torrevieja

Torrevieja
Why go on holiday to Torrevieja?
For up to 340 days of sunshine a year, the choice of five beaches with water sports galore, plus a wide range of Spanish restaurants and international dining to choose from. Just 35km south of Alicante and 70km from the Costa Blanca resort of Benidorm, Torrevieja is a former port, where the largest fleet of sailing boats in the Mediterranean once moored. Today it's a major commercial centre and home to some of Spain's most spectacular festivals.

How much will it cost?
There's fierce competition on return flights to Torrevieja's nearest airport, Alicante, so you should be able to pick up fares from as little as £55 depending on the season. A week's bed and breakfast in the budget Hotel Madrid during peak season for two adults sharing costs £230. Seven days at the beach-front, three-star Hotel La Zenia in peak season costs £790 for full board.

When should I go?
The Costa Blanca's mild temperature means that the beach is hardly ever out of bounds, even in winter. It is one of the driest parts of Spain and temperatures range from 32C/90F in summer to 8C/46F in winter. Festivals occur most months but the most colourful one is August's Habaneras festival, which celebrates the city's Cuban links with a wide range of Latin American concerts and an international music competition.

Who's it for?
There's something for everyone. For families there are beaches and water sports; for night owls there are plenty of clubs and bars; for foodies there's a huge selection of cuisine.

What are the must-sees?
For some Roman history visit the city's old docks at La Mata or if you're an architecture fan you can marvel at the modernist Casino on the waterfront, which has now been converted into a cultural centre. Wildlife lovers should take a trip to the vast salt flats on the edge of the city, home to dozens of species of birds, including regular visits from flamingos. Sun worshippers will be spoilt for choice with a quintet of beaches, the most popular being Locos, Cura and Los Naufragos. Nearby are miles of sandy beaches on La Manga del Mar Menor peninsula.

What will I spend?
Bottle of beer from 80p, camera film £2.50, moderate meal with wine for two £10, litre of petrol 45p, short taxi ride £5. Costs will vary.
