Getting around
Easiest way is on foot. Cars are not allowed in the city. The best all-round view is from a vaporetto (water bus) - and then of course there are the gondolas.

At time of writing, approximate prices: bottle of beer £2.50, moderate restaurant meal £15, roll of camera film £2.50-£3.50. There are no taxis, or indeed cars, in Venice, but a single vaporetto ticket costs just over £1.50.

Shops and businesses open Mon-Sat 8.30am-1pm and then 5-7.30pm; banks Mon-Fri 8.30am-1.30pm and then 2.30-4.30pm.

Health - Before you go
No innoculations necessary. Make sure you have an EHIC form (from UK post offices) so you can claim back any medical treatment you may need in Venice.

If you need a hospital, the Ospedale Civili Riuniti di Venezia is in Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo.

Warnings
Pickpockets and bag-snatchers are the main problems for travellers. Keep all your belongings in a money belt.

Customs
Siestas are the norm so expect shops to shut between 1 and 4pm.

Provided you have the correct paperwork, your pet can go between Venice and the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme. This takes several months to set up, so see your vet.

You are not expected to tip on top of restaurant or taxi charges.
