Review by Peter Dunscombe from Reigate

Only twenty minutes from Dbrovnik, Zaton Veliki offers the perfect antidote to the hectic pace of 21st century living. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, great views and good restaurants then Zaton Veliki is the ideal retreat. The location is idyllic with perfect views across the bay and, if you are prepared to walk 10 minutes around the headland, some stunning views across to the islands which lie just off the coast. There is also an easy coastal footpath around to Zaton Mali. The waters of the Adriatic are very clear and there are lots of little rocky coves in which to sunbathe or swim. In the summer you can also hire canoes.

There are several excellent restaurants in Zaton Veliki although, apart from the main bar/restaurant in the village square, they are closed from the end of Oxtober until March. The Konoba Kasar just past the church has a fantastic fish menu: we actually saw our fish being brought off the boat and then cooked on the barbeque. The main bar/restaurant in the village also does good fish and outstanding steaks. The average price of main courses tends to be about 100 kuna although expect to pay a little more for fish. Local wine/beer is cheap but you will pay a lot more if you want to order anything other than the local wine.

There is a three island cruise on the M/S Zvir which goes from the harbour in Zaton Veliki every day. The cost is 220 Kuna for a full day which includes lunch on board; we would recommend this to anyone who visits. The supermarket in Zaton Veliki has now closed but there are two in the neighbouring village of Zaton Mali and both can be reached by a 20/25 minute walk along the coastal footpath which is very easy going; fresh bread, milk, juices, water etc are available from the village square in Veliki from 7.00 am until 8.00 pm every day.

Driving up through the village in a large car can be tricky as the roads are narrow so it may be better to park in the square and walk round. The bus service to Dbrovnik (No 12) runs 5/6 times a day and takes you to the old bus station from where it is a 20 minute walk/5 minute bus ride to the old town. If you don't have a car and are arriving from the airport, it costs about 350 Kuna with tip.

Review by Sheila Brown from Brackley

Zaton Veliki - A stunning village about half an hour from Dubrovnik. Beautiful azure sea with shady pine woods on the hills. The beach is pebbly and the sea so clear that you can see the fish swimming around! The locals are friendly and there are three restaurants, two of them serving truly fantastic seafood. There is also a kiosk selling fresh bread, pastries, milk and soft drinks, and another selling postcards etc. There is a boat which will take you to Dubrovnik in the morning and returns in the late afternoon - this is great as parking in Dubrovnik is difficult. The same boat service also offer a tour of three nearby islands. All in all a peaceful and relaxing location with restaurants a few minutes apart and easy to get to Dubrovnik should you wish to.
