Burgau is perfect base for exploring the western algarve, as still has a portugese feel to it. Locals are very friendly and own the local businesses, so they appreciat the custom.

Review by Fiona from Ashbourne

Burgau when we went - out of season, in December - was beautiful. It's a compact little village with beautiful old houses in the centre, but is just starting to be developed - almost certainly to it's detriment - as you get further out of the village. I should imagine it gets very busy in the summer, and if you were looking for a beach holiday then it would probably be fine, but we loved it in December. We had the beautiful beach to ourselves, and whilst most of the village's many restaurants had shut for the winter season, there were still a handful open. If you go west out of Burgau you can walk for literally miles along costal paths and walk from village to village through amazing and totally unspoilt scenary with the sea on your left and a national park on your right discovering little coves and beaches with no road access that probably only a handful of other tourists ever get to. We spent most of our holiday walking the costal paths,... more

Review by Liz from Rochdale

Burgau is the perfect family destination. It is full of friendly bars and authentic Portuguese restaurants allowing you to have a great night out. The beach is small but beautiful and uncrowded. with its beach bar in one corner serving you tasty food and snacks from lunch right through 'til bedtime. Avoid Jimmy's if you want to sample the real Algarve and instead head for the restaurant Matias and the bar Burgau Verandahs for drinks overlooking the sea and live entertainment. Do some souvenir shopping in the English owned Sardine Factory and get to know the locals and buy the best fruit and veg at the daily market opposite the bus stop.

Burgau is perfectly situated on the western Algarve with the city of Largos and it's bohemian atmosphere a mere 10 minute drive away and the large unspoilt beaches of Carrepeterria and Sargres in the opposite direction.

A great place to stay, thoroughly recommnended.

Review by Philip from London

I thought Burgau would be very portuguese, but in fact it was very british which was disappointing. The coastal walks to Luz and particularly Saleema are breathtaking and I would thoroughly recommend them. The restaurants are very good. The local people are very nice.

Burgau has all the charm of an authentic, rustic, Mediterranean fishing village. The narrow cobbled streets, white washed buildings and stunning cliff top walks made us feel truly off the beaten tourist track. Yet the friendly locals never made us feel anything but welcome visitors in their village. Even though the apartment has everything you would need for home cooking, the tempting range of restaurants meant we ate out every night. Among our favourites were The Beach Bar, for its stunning views and Dom Dinis for its charm and varied menu. The white, sandy beach surrounded by the dramatic cliff face is one of the best beaches we have been to in the Mediterranean. Burgau in its self has everything a young couple or a family could wish for as a holiday destination. we did explore abit further by hiring a car and visiting Sagres with its incredible beach, Lagos for its unforgettable dolphin watching experience, Cape St Vicent for its breath ... more
