At present the area is very traditional, shopkeepers know a little english and the locals are really friendly.

There is much building work going on around North Cyprus in general so if you want to see the real country visit soon. Food and supplies are quite expensive. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from but not much in the way of shopping unless you go into the larger towns.

Alsancak (pronounced Alsanjack is well served for supermarkets and restaurants to meet all tastes and pockets. Buying 11 entrecote steaks from a butcher for the barbecue was unbelievable, ie 22 YTL (Cypriot Turkish lira) with a rate of 2.56 to one pound sterling . There are numerous beaches close and a short car journey will take you to either unspoiled moutain roads with spectacular sea and country views or to open farm land where the citrus trees are grown. There are wonderfully quiet bays that you can swim, surf or scuba dive. The north of Cyprus is like the south was 30 years ago and the people are just as friendly, if not more so.
