Beaune and Pommard are extremely different and we stayed at Pommard. It is a quiet , relaxing small town, fine as a place to start. You can drive to many restaurants and tourist sites without encountering a crowd. But Beaune is crowded and hard to park in. We went there to get our newspapers and use the internet and occasionally to eat. We enjoyed visiting but preferred staying where we were.

Beaune is a beautiful French city. I had been there before in 1997 and knew I wanted to return. The city is small enough to be charming and quaint, and big enough to have all the amenities a tourist wants. Beaune is a beautful town for a walk, the restaurants are inviting, and there are many shops. The Hotel Dieu is a fascinating remembrance of a much earlier time, and of course, the wine is world famous. Throw in the lovely weather we experienced during our holiday, and what more could anyone ask for in the French countryside? And it's only a three hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Paris.
