Frigiliana is a mountain village around 40 mins drive from Malaga Airport. It offers an ideal family holiday destination. Close to the seaside resort of Nerja, Frigiliana has been voted "the prettiest village in all of Andalucia" and its title is well deserved. It is a beautiful village of whitewashed houses, history and culture. It offers a wonderful alternative to over-crowded Spanish resorts and you get to meet local people, buy local produce and mingle with villagers in the restaurants and bars. We actually saw women sitting outside their houses making local crafts and we loved the square that houses the historic church - and a wonderful bar with tables outside where you can watch the world go by.
With a hire car, you can visit Granada and the Alhambra (90 mins), the huge weekly market at Fuengirola, Tivoli world theme park at Benalmedana, Nerja caves - amazing experience (10 mins away), explore quiet beaches away from Nerja
or (in winter) go skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Frigiliana has a cyber cafe if you can't bear to be away from the internet for too long :), a very small supermarket (larger supermarkets in Nerja), wonderful mountain and coastal views - and very friendly people :)
It is a mountain village so if someone in your party has mobility problems, remember that depending on where your accommodationis , you might need to walk uphill to the village centre (or back). There are excellent regular buses into Nerja if you want discos and nightlife, trendy boutiques or a wider range of gifts and crafts . (We bought the wonderful local pottery in Frigiliana as holiday gifts.) ...

Frigiliana is a very beautiful, very old, authentic little white mountain city.
Located at the top of the mountain at the end of a green valley, you have a stunning view over the ocean and the surrunding mountains.
It only takes you 5 minutes to go to the beaches at the fod of the mountain.

FRIGILIANA is a beautiful mountain village, close to Nerja. There are two parts to the village - old and new Frigiliana - but even in the new area, you feel you are in the "real" Spain.
Frigiliana has been voted the prettiest village in Andalucia - and well deserves this accolade. You can wander through narrow streets of quaint white-washed houses fronted by amazing floral displays and hanging baskets.
If youre not a beach lover and prefer a tranquil holiday then you can find most things you will need in the village. There are banks, a pharmacy, a small supermarket and countless bars and restaurants.  Theres a tourist office with exhibitions in the old sugar factory and, if your accommodation doesnt have its own pool then you can stroll down to the village pool. Theres also a Splash pizza bar where the kids can enjoy a swim while you eat your pizza in peace :)
The local pottery is beautiful and you can buy Frigiliana crafts and wine (free tasting available) at two or three shops.
There is a small adventure playground at the top of the hill - you can sit and enjoy a drink and keep an eye on the little ones and a new underground car park has just opened which has solved the parking problem that previously existed at busy times.
One of our favourite places was the old village square with historic church. Theres a great restaurant where you can sit outside under parasols and enjoy a relaxing lunch. Toasted sandwiches are only 2Euro !
There are a range of hill and mountain walks which begin in the village, including a beautiful 2 hour stroll along the old river bed to the coastal town of Nerja. (If you prefer to take things easy, theres a very reliable bus service to and from Nerja - less than 1Euro each way.)
If you get the chance, you could visit the Forgotten Village which is a few kilometres further up the mountain. It was abandoned decades ago but an enterprising family has bought it and is now restoring all the houses as a rental village.  You can also enjoy incredible views by taking a picnic to the old castle ruins.
Frigiliana is a great base for visiting other places - the Alhambra in Granada for example (dubbed the 8th wonder of the world.) is only 90 minutes away - through the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountains.  Remember, tickets to the Alhambra are limited so its always best to book them online in advance or you might be disappointed. Theres a friendly cyber cafe in Frigiliana so you could book from there - and check your emails if you cant bear to be out of contact for too long.
If you prefer touristy beach resorts with a host of English bars and restaurants showing Coronation Street at night then Frigiliana probably isnt for you. But if you want to experience the authentic Spain, meet real local people and see some amazing local sights, then its the perfect place for your next holiday.
