Funchal is delightful. Through traffic is now greatly reduced because of the motorway, therefore traffic fumes and noise are at a minimum. Buses are very frequent and, if you do not wish to rent a car, you can travel extensively round the island on local transport. It is a real pleasure to walk along the promenade and wander round the very old streets. The flower and fish market maintain a traditional feel. Good quality, reasonably priced restaurants, are numerous. A very nice area to eat is down by the marina at the yacht harbour. Locally caught Espada (black scabbard) is a delicious fish, cooked by several methods. Funchal is a compact, attractive and extremely pleasant town.

Funchal is a delightful town. It has a lot of charm and is a pleasure to walk round now that the motorway has diverted a considerable amount of traffic away from the centre. It is appropriate for anyone of any age. There are many restaurants providing good quality food at reasonable prices.
