Limnos is hard to get to. The flight and boat connections are not easy. Thats why thereare relatively few tourists. The island only gets busy in July and August when many Greeks return to their home island for the summer. Over half the islands population emigated in the decades after the second world war. Some have come back permenantly, giving the island a delightful mix of insulatrity and cosmoplitanism. You can meet in a narrow village street a black clad old lady....who will greet you with a welcome in perfect Australin English. The islanders we have encouterred are at once very attatched to their island, but very open and welcoming of strangers. Limnos is the seventh largest Greek island, but little known, and sparsely populated. The green, gently rolling spring pastures full of sheep, the parched summer wheatfields, the long red overarching sunsets exude an impression of peace and tranquility.
