Review by CAROLE from WIGAN

Lismore is a town that is historically enchanting. Its recorded history goes back to 636 AD when St. Carthage founded a monastry there. There is a castle and a cathedral. Sir Walter Raleigh lived here and the Scientist Robert Boyle was born there. The castle is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. There is a natural spring to the side of the castle where you can fill up your water bottles if you so wish. The town itself is quite small and very rural and probably looks the same as it did a hundred years ago. Foley's on the Mall is an excellent place to have a meal as is Eamonn's Bar. Best steaks in town although he likes to cook them quite well done!!! The Rustic Cafe' is the place to go for a hot chocolate and home made cake plus plenty of 'crack' with the assistants there. We visited the Heritage Centre on a wet and windy Thursday and we were hugely impressed with the "Lismore Experience" which was an audio-visual masterpiece. ... more

Review by John from Cwmbran

Lismore is a lovely small village. The historic castle gardens were amazing, although you were not allowed inside the castle due to it being occupied. The cathedral is spendid and the village was clean and spotless. The people were very nice and friendly. For a small place it had a few pubs and the classroom was very good with traditional live Irish music on a Thursday night and the Hotel providing live music on the Saturday. It had some good golf courses nearby and was about half an hour from Dungarven (Gold Coast) and Youghal for those fun days out on the beach and to do some shopping. In easy reach of Cork and Waterford. Lismore is the place to stay if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of seaside towns but with a bit of life to it.
