Review by Review by visitor Mlini is a small village located just off the main coastal road roughly halfway between the City of Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik airport, in the region Zupa Dubrovacka. The word 'Mlini' means mill and it is possible to see why as there is a large stream running from the mountains through the centre and a very large mill wheel. Set off and below the main road it is peaceful and quiet. Most Croatians in the tourist areas speak good enough English to get by. The young people tend to have a bit of an american twang, TV no doubt. They also speak German, Italian, a bit of French and they can get by in other languages similar to Croatian, but it does help sometimes if you try to say a few words in their language, even if you mangle it. At least it serves as an ice breaker! The coastal path runs through Mlini through to Srebreno and the local council has recently invested in upgrading this walkway improving wh at was aleady a very pleasant walk through the trees. There are numerous places to sunbathe and access to the sea is very easy. Beaches are not sandy but vary in pebble size from small to egg sized so rubber mats or cushions can be useful! Most of the beaches are not far from some form of bar/ cafe. Incidently most bars/ cafes are open from 9.00 in the morning through to 12.00 midnight depending upon the season and most serve daytime snacks although the local supermarkets in Srebreno can supply a good range of picnic type food.
There are no clubs in Mlini. For this you need to walk around to Srebreno on the other side of the bay. There are a few restaurants in Mlini serving a range of local dishes and if you like fish then there is a wide range to choose from. At our last visit in September 2007, Vegetarians were limited for choice on the menu, although some places will make something specific if asked.
There are only two hotels in Mlini, owned by the same company but the majority of accomodation is apartments and villas. Due to the fact it is set well below the main road the roads are steep and there are many steps (this can help to build up an appetite/ work off those kilos!) unless yor are staying in accommodation near to the waterfront. Mlini is not really geared up for disabled people, but saying that we have seen a number of wheelchair users in the resort. The Hotel Asterea does have a taxi bus, there are also elevators to all floors and ramped access at the front and rear so this makes it a lot easier for people who find walking a bit difficult.
Mlini is a relaxing place but if you want a bit more activity then you can hire a boat, go on a touristy boat trip to one of the many islands, or you can arrange an excursion, or if you are feeling a bit more energetic there is water polo or scuba diving or the really active sport of lying there and doing absolutely nothing!
In the past 12 months or so a PADI registered diving/scuba centre has opened in Mlini harbour and caters for all levels including beginners.
Mlini is also an excellent base for trips further afield, being only half an hour or so from the border with Montenegro and from there about 1 hour to the bay of Kotor.
Mlini is fairly well established and has recovered quite well from the civil war (it was occupied by the Serbian and Montenegran army) and there are still some scars on the buildings from the trouble when you leave the bay area between Mlini and Plat, and in Srebreno, but don't be put off by this. There is a fair bit of investment going into the area but it takes time. We think this is still a good time to investigate this area before it becomes too popular. Remember it was less than 20 years ago when this area was a magnet for British tourists and we are still warmly welcomed. ... more
