Review by Eric from Cheltenham motril is certainly like no other spanish town we have been to, lacking grand buildings, churches, castles etc it is a working class town and makes no bones about it. it does however make a good base to see other, more attractive, parts of the region. the highlight of course are the alpujarras, the scenery fantastic and the villages have a majesty of their own. nearby townships of almunecar and salobrena are also worth more than one visit. frigiliana and the caves at nerja are a must though we were a little disappointed with nerja itself, the advent of many expatriates seems to have drained away much of the spanish feel. among our memories of this our first visit to motril will be the great tapas some of which almost constituted a meal on their own and the friendliness of the people. every time we had to ask directions we were given the maximum of help in the nicest of ways, sometimes people went out of their way, almost taking us to the place we wanted to get too. if you want to get a glimpse of the real spain, away from the concrete jungle known as the costa del sol then this area has much to offer. warts and all we will return in the near future as we are already suffering from tapas withdrawal symptoms. ... more
Review by Fi from Blackboys Casa Pequena, just outside Motril, is a beautiful, incredibly restful and relaxing holiday place, with gorgeous gardens full of flowers even in february. very well situated for visiting Granada and the coastal towns of Salobrena etc. Very well equipped with Sky, dishwasher, microwave, etc (none of which we have at home!) and comfortable living areas inside and out. we really loved our stay here - one of the best places weve stayed in 8 years of visiting the Med. Shame it was (in Feb) a bit too cold to swim in the pool - but we still sat out most evenings. The cooking area is fantastic - Its a pity that more English people dont make use of the Paelleria cooker outside! Patrick and his dogs made us very welcome, and we loved the quiet, off the track situation with beautiful viewsl. Would (and will) highly recommend! Motril is good for local shopping, with a choice of supermarkets, Tabachi, and bars and restaurants. There has definitely been a lot of local investment by the local council, and there is a stylish tourist office by the steps of the church.

Review by Paul from Lancaster Motril offers a full range of convenient shopping services. It is a working Spanish port in a booming part of the coast. It has good promiximity to the tourist resorts of Salobrena and Alumencar, which offer the additional range of seaside tourist options. It also has good proximity to the scenic rural Lecrin Valley and the Alpujharras villages. The historic bustling city of Granada is only 45 minutes away. The Al Hambra is one of the most impressive historic buildings in Europe.
Review by Louise from Nottingham Motril and the Costa Tropical in general seems like a popular holiday destination for the Spanish families. We were there at the beginning of the summer break - beginning of August when it suddenly came alive with people travelling down to the coast. There was definitely a buzz about the place when this happened with ferias going on up and down the coast. Not your traditional brit holiday on the costas, but then not everyone is into that, if you're into experiencing the seaside from a spanish point of view and sampling authentic spanish lifestyle this is a very interesting destination. Hardly met any brits in all our stay there, and not many locals speak english.
Review by member from Bournemouth Motril, a charming working town more than seasonal resort, good clean beaches and excellent shopping. Easy base to explore La Alpujarra, Granada & Sierra Nevada. Remains unspoilt and Spanish, unlike some nearby resorts like Nerja - not overrun with Brits
