Porto Santo is a weird combination - very quiet, with not much evidence of locals, but there is loads of building work going on which we are unsure is sustainable, certainly not in the current climate. The Columbo development in particular is very ugly. But all the viewpoints are well worth a visit - usually we were the only people there, climbing Pico di Castela is a must. The restaurants were disappointing but two were worth a visit - Vila Alencastre (Pedras Pretas opposite Zirko supermarket) and Baiana in the main square in Vila Baleira. If you do just want to drop out of the world for a week, Porto Santo is a good place to do it.
