Review by Tom from Dunfermline Puerto del Carmen offers the charm of the Old Town and the lively resaurants and night life of the main strip, which is a least two miles long. There are three beaches offering facilities for all ages. There are many water sports ranging from diving to deap sea fishing. If you are not enargetic you can relax on one of the well managed beaches. Local transport is good with buses running to other resorts. There are lots of taxis available in town, which can be handy due to the fact that while the main strip is flat the town itself is quite hilly. Normally I would say Puerto del Carmen is an alll year around destination however there is a great deal of disruption at the moment due to the extistence road works along the front and the extesion of the harbour wall at the Old Town. I would recommend that Playa Blanca might be a better alternative until the disruption is over. The harbour work is scheduled to end in May 09 but I suspect the major roadw oks might extend into the summer. ... more
Review by Caroline from Ireland During our stay in Puerto Del Carmen, in Nov 08 Lanzarote had perfect weather, comfortably hot, with only one cloudy day. Walk the entire length of the beach, starting at the Fariones Hotel, along Playa Blanca, Los Pocillos and right out out to the Beatriz Playa Hotel in Matagorda. This takes about an hour, and if you haven't the energy to walk back you can always get a taxi. Great to see the different areas of the strip, would definetly recommend the Playa Blanca as being the best area, because of the clean sand here, it is the livliest area of the strip and if you are staying near the Fariones Hotel area, you are very close to the old Harbour for restaurants at night time. There are several restaurants (italian, indian, chinese, mexican) and pubs along the strip, typically of spanish tourist appearance. The American-Indian Cafe appeared to have the largest crowd, thanks to the live rock band. But if you prefer a more traditional setting wth a bit of character, The old Harbour area has beautiful restaurants where you can sit looking out over the water. I'd highly recommend La Botega Restaurant, don't be put off by the Q's, they move quite quickly, and for authentic Indian food, I'd recommend Indian Zafraan (again if the place is full, they will direct you across the street to the "Bus Stop" open pub where they will call you when they are ready) Both of these are just past the Biosfere shopping centre on the way down to the old harbour. The Biosfere Shopping Centre is quite big, lots of interesting shops, including Mango, Zara, Jack and Jones, Swarovski, Sunglass Hut and many more. It is located between the old and new town. You can also get to the old town along the water edge, this is a lovely stroll, especially in the evening time. From the new town, turn left at the Hotel Fariones and walk along, passing the 2nd Fariones hotel, and then turn left again, taking you back down to the water edge again. You will come out at Playa "Chica", a small beach, with rocks to dive from and occupied by alot more locals. Walking along this old charming area, you will come across the slip, where you can go out diving, banana boat rides or take a boat ride out to Fuerteventura or the marina Puerto Calero. Carry on walking, enjoying the breath taking views and you will come out at the Harbour Area, with all the gorgeous restaurants. Your only problem now is to choose just one. If you get stuck with a cloudy day, I'd recommend the short boat ride out to Puerto Calero, It is a small marina, with loads of restaurants and some higher end boutiques. We visited on a Sunday, not recommended as everything was closed and the place was rather quiet. Weekdays would surely be better. If you venture to the end of the Strip to Beatriz Playa Hotel, you could visit their Spa. You could easily pass an hour or two in here, with their steam room, jacuzzis, large pool with jets to massage different body areas. The Spa staff are very friendly, towels are provided and you can help yourself to fresh orange juice, water or tea. You also have the use of the gym, and all for 21 euro each. You can also have a facial or massage, but these must be booked in advance. Lanzarote is great value for money, two course dinner for two, with 2 bottles of house wine at the Indian Zaffran cost 45 euro. A Fillet Steak dinner would be about 12 to 15 euro max. Full english breakfast was on offer in several places for about 3 to 4 euro. A glass of wine about 3 euro. Shop around the supermarkets for the best price in spirits and cigarettes. We got a litre of Jameson irish whiskey for 11.60 and 200 cigarettes for 18 euro. We visited Lanzarote 5 years ago, and found the place to be much quiter this time. The economic slump has definetly affected the area. There are major road works on the strip on the Playa Blanca area, but hopefully the strip will be all the better for it soon. Apparently there are plans to pedestrianise the strip, which would be lovely. These road works make it awkward for taxi's and for catching buses if you want to travel outside the resort. If lying all the day on the beach for your entire stay doesn't quite appeal, there are several places where you can book a day trip, visiting the island of Fuerventura, a day on a catamaran, a trip to the markets in Playa Blance or a visit to Timanfaya Mountain. If you are only going to do one, then I'd suggest the last trip as you get to see different areas of the island which are amazing, including their vineyards, the caves with underground pools, the volcanic mountain, and a beautifly charming village high up in the mountains. I'd highly recommend Lanzarote as a family resort, for couples in their 30's upwards and for older people. It is not overly commercialised and I don't think it ever will be. The beaches are endless. Their is a huge choice of restaurants, and the food is wonderful. ... more
Review by Ian from Bolton Puerto del Carmen is for me the ideal destination for a holiday because the resort offers something for everyone. It can be lively in the small nightclub area or you can have it more tranquil in the very good resteraunts and bars that are plentyfull on the main "strip" and down in the old town and also around the harbour. The beaches are large and the town itself very clean also with excellent shopping too. Looking foward to going back soon.
