Saumane de Vaucluse is close to many more well-known Provencal towns and villages, as well as the more cosmopolitan city of Avignon. It is within walking distance of Isle sur Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse both of which have an abundance of restaurants,cafes and shops as well as the scenic natural and architectural beauty for which these places are renowned. The countryside is abundant with wild flowers as well as the produce grown by the local farming community. The river which flows from the 'source' at Fontaine de Vaucluse had the clearest water imaginable and is a haven for wildlife. We were unable to kayak on the river because of the recent rainfall but it would be a fantastic way to enjoy the river. Gordes is well worth a visit - perched as it is over the most amazing vista. It's inevitably rather touristy but not in a tacky way!
