Sharm Al Shaikh has changed considerably in the ten years since we were there last. Predictably it has become over-crowded and too commercialized. It is too large to walk around, and this led us to hire a car, which enabled us to get away from the crowds and into more natural surroundings happily found nearby in Ras Mohammed, where we enjoyed unspoilt beaches with very few people on them (all for a price, but worth it). This gave us unlimited access to the prime attraction for me and my family, the coral reefs, which were as brilliant and unforgettable as before. We took one boat trip, but had to swim through crowds to get to the reef, and one dive which was promised turned out to be extremely dangerous, and we were left with the real and uncomfortable impression that the dive instructor was unacceptably inexperienced. It was certainly not good value for money! I would not go back to Sharm, but would certainly consider Dahab, which happened to suit our requirements better. ... more
