Fairly quiet and very pretty.  Convenient for Brisbane without being in the city.  Unfortunately we could not swin in sea apart from designated areas due to stingers, crocs and sharks but this is the same all along this coast.  The very fact that you are near to Barrier Reef makes up for this and if you like to snorkel you must do the trip from either Cairns or Port Douglas.  Pick the more expensive trips they are definately worth it and really only cost about £20 more than their cheaper counterparts.  The extra money buys you a much more luxurious trip. There are numerous places to visit in the area from beach to rain forest to outback and there are lots of organised trips to do however I would say hire a car and drive yourselves you can then do as you please and it probably costs less for a weeks hire than it would to do the trips.  Food is excellent value there are Bar-B-Q areas everywhere or it is very reasonable to eat out.  Coffee and cakes are fab although it is very humid so you may prefer the delicious ice creams! ... more
