The apartment
Exquisite top-floor apartment occupying a commanding position at the top of magical Patara Prince Resort, with both sea AND Kalkan views.
Designed by one of Turkeys top architects and constructed on white, local stone terraces leading down to the Mediterranean, you wont believe how beautiful Patara Prince resort is, even when youre there! Situated 1 km across the bay from Kalkan (recommended by the INDEPENDENT as a destination of choice, especially for those seeking a romantic vacation) amid abundant tropical gardens, and giving direct access to the sea, Patara Prince resort is unrivalled in this part of the Mediterranean for style and elegance. Nothing short of a seaside paradise. FROMMERS GUIDE
With stunning sea and Kalkan views from the private, bougainvillea-swathed balcony, inside, the roof-level apartment boasts a wealth of character features including french windows, vaulted cedarwood ceiling, bamboo-screened window separating kitchen from living area, atmospheric ceiling fan in bedroom (and mosquito netting at window) and tasteful furnishings throughout. Fully air-conditioned (there are 2 air-con units - 1 in the living area and 1 in the bedroom - which can also be switched to provide heating in the cooler months), all mod cons include living area with 2 sofabeds (1 double, the other converts into 2 singles), 26-channel satellite TV, DVD player (that can also play divx movies from CD, DVD or USB devices), CD player (that can also play MP3s from USB memory sticks and SD/MMC memory cards) king-size bed in bedroom, safety-deposit box in wardrobe washing machine, ironing board and iron, marble worktops with fitted electric hob and mini-oven, kettle and toaster in kitchen hairdryer in bathroom and 2 cushioned sun loungers on the balcony. A shop which stocks all the essentials youre likely to need is literally a stones throw away as is an infinity pool (one of the 3 pools on the complex), kids pool, tennis courts and car park.
Kalkan
Kalkan is a sophisticated small resort but friendly and completely undeveloped compared to places like Marmaris and Bodrum. English is widely spoken and its the kind of place youll want to come back to again and again and again. Founded by Greek traders from the nearby island of Kastellorizo 200 years ago and Greek-populated until 1923, Kalkan and nearby town Kas are both renowned for their Greek architecture – wooden balconies, bougainvillea etc. And the old town is now subject to strict preservation orders so is guaranteed to retain its character. In Kalkan, where there is a roof there is a restaurant and competition has made the town a gastronomic treat. If youve tried all the restaurants on Patara Prince resort already there are 3 serving everything from pizza to Turkish and Mediterranean specialities - take the water taxi over the bay to Kalkan town (or jump in a taxi or its a 10-15 minute stroll) and sample one of the 40 restaurants there. Our favourite is Adems Restaurant - recently relocated to just outside town on the glorious road to Kas (see photos) - and if you eat there youll get 10% discount. (He provides free taxi service as well!) Kalkan has a number of small shops and boutiques selling clothes, jewellery, leather goods and pottery and theres also a local market every Thursday. But for a really big market, dont miss out on a trip to Fethiye (every Tuesday).
Attractions/Wonderful places to visit
You could imagine yourself on the Cote dAzur without the pretentiousness. Drive along the mountain-backed road to Kas, and you might be touring the Amalfi coast THE TIMES
The small town of KAS is about 12 miles away and the spectacular journey from Kalkan has been listed as one of the 10 most beautiful coastal drives in the world. Greece comes right up to the Turkish mainland here as KASTELLORIZO, the most easterly of all the Greek Islands and the setting for Best Foreign Language film, Mediterraneo sits practically in the harbour at Kas and within a mile and a half of the shore. Take a glorious day-trip from Kas which will cost you only 12 euros. Greeces proximity makes it possible to make a stay here a two-country holiday as from FETHIYE, 45 miles away, hydrofoils make the 1½ hour crossing to RHODES (an official entry point into Greece) every weekday in summer too.
Its a little-known fact but there are more Greek and Roman ruins in Turkey than in Greece and Italy put together! Just one such is to be found at nearby PATARA birth-place of Father Christmas and oracle of Apollo - and after which Patara Prince resort is named and indeed modelled! This ruined Roman city guards the approach to a 10-mile long white sand beach, one of the longest anywhere in the Mediterranean and which has recently been featured on BBC1s HOLIDAY programme and topped the EVENING STANDARDs list of Ten Fantastic Summer Beaches! Sun-bathe, swim or go horse-riding there all day long but at night Patara beach is the exclusive preserve of loggerhead turtles who come here to nest.
In ancient, pre-Roman times, the Turquoise Coast from Fethiye round to almost Antalya, was known as Lycia ("Land of Light"). The Lycians many monuments still dot the entire landscape of the south-west coast of Turkey and the ruins close by at UNESCO World Heritage site, XANTHOS - those which werent removed by Charles Fellowes and taken to the British Museum! - are a must. Visit LETOON, where Alexander the Great received the prophecy that he would go on to conquer Persia, and the sunken city at KEKOVA, reachable only by boat either from Kas or Ucagiz (or, better still, charter a boat in the harbour at Kalkan and take a 2-day private cruise in style and at a price which, for the experience, you simply wont believe).SAKLIKENT GORGE (Hidden Valley), was only discovered as recently as 18 years ago and is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey and the second-biggest in Europe! And the LYCIAN WAY, Turkeys only long-distance footpath, also passes through Kalkan, Kas and Finike as well as many ancient sites on its spectacular route through the mountains and along the coastline of south-west Turkey, following the line of Roman and Ottoman roads, mule tracks and nomad trails. Voted one of the Top Ten Best Hiking Trails in the World by the SUNDAY TIMES, the Lycian Way is suitable for casual and dedicated walkers alike. Kalkan is a comfortable base from which to explore sections of the trail and Patara Prince Resort a fantastic place to pamper yourself if youve completed the whole route. Come in spring and autumn when the temperatures are pleasant for walking and the sea warm enough to swim, or winter is also excellent as days are often sunny and warm and the snow-covered peaks of the Taurus mountains form an impressive backdrop.
Swimming, sun-bathing, sailing, scenery, walking, history - this part of Turkey has it all. Come and see it for yourself now while its still so unspoilt. You wont be disappointed. Its not a holiday, its heaven!
