Located 8 km west of Portimão, Alvor became an important port during the time of the Moorish occupation. It once had its own castle, which was destroyed by the earthquake on 1 November 1755. Originally built by the Carthaginians in 436 AD, it was attacked and plundered by the Christian Crusaders in 1189, at the same time as the larger settlements of Silves and Portimão were taken. King João II died here in 1495, after taking the waters at the spa of Monchique in an attempt to cure his dropsy.
The village itself is a maze of cobbled streets and a 16th-century parish church with a fine Manueline portal featuring a round arch and abstract floral motifs. The village of Alvor, its twisting streets and small squares stands not on the beach but on a sheltered tidal lagoon. In the evening holidaymakers stroll the narrow streets and lanes of the old village to choose from the many attractive restaurants.
As to be expected, fish is the specialty dish in this charming village from where the fishermen set out each night.

This is a great place for children to play and a favorite with locals when summer beaches become crowded.

If any one place on the Algarve deserves to be called paradise, it is the lagoon at Alvor. As the sun sinks towards the distant shadow of Ponte de Piedade the yachts and fishing boats become silhouettes against the blazing sunset. Alvor is perhaps best known for its wide beach, almost 15 kilometers of golden sand, popular with families because of its good, safe surf. There are restaurants on the beach and wind surfers and sailing boats for hire in season. At the eastern end is the Praia de Três Irmãos- beach of the three brothers - which is a more intimate, sandy cove, particularly good for snorkeling, with underwater grottoes and rock formations to explore. As well as Alvor beach itself, there are some lovely golden stretches of sand towards Portimão, most notably the small cove of Praia dos Três Irmãos with its magnificent red cliffs. Further east are the deserted caves and grottoes at João de Areus and the quiet, secluded beach of Praia do Vau nearby. Nearby. The small village of Abidaca, situated on a slope to the east of Alvor, has traces of a Roman settlement. Further east, the bustling fishing port of Portimão has many good restaurants and plenty of nightlife 

There is a wide range of restaurants in Alvor offering a choice of delicious and inexpensive local fare and international cuisine. You will find some restaurants offer traditional Portuguese entertainment with folk music and the haunting 'Fado' singing. At the 'Alvila' restaurant they can even arrange free transport to their weekly Fado night so you can leave the car at home. There is also a casino nearby and several discos.
Alvor is only a few minutes by bus or car from the busy town of Portimão. Visitors on self-catering may find it worthwhile to make a trip to the shopping centre on the outskirts of Portimão.

For a night out join the crowds around the bars and restaurants of nearby Praia da Rocha. This is package holiday land and Rocha bustles well into the early hours.
