Nafplio was once the capital of Greece. It is now the capital of Argolida and a popular town for Tourism, not only during the summer but all year round. It is 147km from Athens and has a population of 10,000.
Its pretty, splendid harbour and old town is visited mainly by Greek tourists at the weekend. There is a lovely view of the Venetian castle, 'The Bourtzi', which is surrounded by the sea. An old castle and fortress, “The Palamidi” stands on a mountain overlooking the town. At night-time, it is lit-up and displays a magnificent view.
The ancient part of the town is exciting and has its own unusual, authentic, atmosphere. It has cobbled alleyways paved with stone and is lined with Tourist shops and many local taverns which serve traditional Greek food, plus international cuisine. One can eat and admire the picturesque harbour or go to one of the local taverns in the heart of the old town with its romantic atmosphere and there are several bars and clubs for your evening entertainment.
Shops are tucked away along the narrow cobbled streets that wind in and out. The colours of some of the houses and mansions are that of sandy stone which shine in the sun. With its old medieval neoclassic town, Nafplio is a dream to visit. Old houses are painted with the lovely Boukamvili flower which hang-over the balconies and the town comes alive at night. Stroll around the ancient pathways and sense the atmosphere of olden times and past history.

Apart from its beauty, it is ideal for summer holidays for the family. In the evening,walk along the beautiful romantic harbour and see the illumination of the Bourtzi. Embrace the air and enjoy life here like never before.

Nafplio is also known for its ancient monuments, and both foreign and Greek tourists enjoy visiting this charming place. It is a neo-classical city and besides its renowned castles, there is also the archaelogical museum to visit, located in a Venetian building of 1715. It houses Mycenaen and prehistoric findings from all over Argolida. You can also find potteries of the Mycenaen times and the copper suit of armour which dates back to 1450 and earthen masks and shields until stoned vessels.
There is a mosque in Syntagmatos square and one can also visit the Church of Spyridonas where Kapodistrias was murdered.
Also,the first primary school in Nafplio,was under the ruling of Kapodistrias.
The Bavarian Lion is a piece of sculpture by the German sculpturer Siggel. It is an exquisite piece of art-work and depicts the sorrow of a sleeping lion. It is a dedication to the Bavarian soldiers who died in 1833-34 of typhus and are buried there. It can be found north-east of Pronia.
Nafplio is near the site of Mycenae and the ancient theater of Epidaurus and also you can find trips to Athens,Delphi and ancient Olympia. One can book cruises to Spetses, Poros and Hydra as well as Monemvassia.

 

Nearby Tolon, is a beautiful resort which caters for the family. It has lovely beaches,taverns and restaurants. Tolo is a popular resort for all ages. It was once just a small fishing village.
Karathona, which also has a lovely sandy beach and beautiful view, is only a few minutes by car. Karathona has a couple of tavernas and some bars/cafeterias. The beach is popular with the locals
