The village
A marine town, on the Empordà coast, in the south of the Bay of Roses. The coast extends from so-called "grauet d'Empúries" (previously the bed of the river Fluvià) in the north, to the Montgó headland in the south. L'Escala has a great variety of landscapes and settlements: modern nuclei near the sea, the old town itselt, the medieval village of St. Martí d'Empúries and other small rural or fortified hamlets such as Cinc Claus, Les Corts, Vilanera and Els Recs. Festivals form part of the traditioni and history of l'Escala.
Time has changed many things but certain festivals are still celebrated in l'Escala; carnival, summer concerts, the Carmen festival, the anchovy festival, the "giants" meeting and the Sardana gatherings.

L'Escala, History
More than 2,500 year ago Greek sailors first landed on our beach. The expeditioin came from Phocacea for the purpose of opening up the rich markets of the Iberian Peninsula to the Greek world. At the time Empúries was a somewaht inhospitable place inhabited by indigenous people with a primitive culture and economy.
In the early 6th century B.C the Greeks founded their first settlement (the Palaià Pólis) on what was then a small island, now joined to the coast, the site of the medieval village of Sant martí d'Empúries. Shortly afterwards they founded a new city on the mainland (the Néa Pólis) (Greek city). The colony was called Emporion, which means market in Greek.
The city grew thanks to a flourishing trade with the peoples of the Peninsula. Its strength and culture had enormous influence on the evolution of the native tribes in the surrounding area; the upshot of this process was the birth of local Iberian culture.
In 218 B.C., on the outbreak of the Second Punic War, Roman warships anchored in the port os Empúries, the first step on the road to Roman domination of the Peninsula. The army was under the command of C. Cornelius Scipio and his aim was to bar the way to the Carthaginians. Later Marcus Portius Cato decided to set up a military camp in Empúries which was to be the nucleus of a new city (Roman city), founded around 100 B.C. Durins the reign of the Emperor Augustus, the Greek and Roman cities were physically and juridically united under the name of Municipium Emporiae.
Whilt Gerunda (Girona), Barcino (barcelona), Tarraco (Tarragona) and other Roman cities on the Peninsula gradually grew in importance, Emporiae waned as the years went by. The city was abandoned in the second half of the 3rd century A.D. The sands crept over it and the march of time did the rest...
In the fourth century A.D. the present monumental site of Empúries was a huge cementery (on the site of the ancient Greek city) laid out around a paleoChristian basilica. There the inhabitants of what is now the town of Sant Martí d'Empúries were buried.
