Our Seaside Home
This cottage has been my family’s seaside holiday home for the past 35 years. We believe this to be among the most beautiful bays in the world and are pleased to share our smuggling secrets with you in the hope that you may also uncover the many treasures hidden here. We’ve also just given it a well needed face-lift, so we hope you enjoy the changes we’ve made.
Why Vention Garden Cottage
The house takes its name from an invention that remains in the neighbouring garden -- a giant kiln that towers above the beach next to the house below. If you are standing at the pool and looking out towards the sea, it is directly beneath the lily pond. In the 18th and 19th centuries, lime and sandstone taken from a variety of quarries in the area were transported along the coast by barge to this beach where their impurities were burnt off in the kiln before being taken away by sled and oxon along the narrow lanes that characterise the area.
