The Town
Essaouira
It is easy to appreciate why Essaouira has been awarded the status of a UNESCO world heritage site and why I and countless others have been stimulated to make return visits.
The former Portuguese trading post, with its labyrinth of alleyways and blue and white shuttered houses, which are a legacy of its rich cosmopolitan past, still retains its identity as a town used to working for its living.
This can be observed in the working harbour where skiffs are hand-built and fresh fish is landed and served in the harbourside stalls, in the cellars under the "little remparts" which gave the town its name where thuya wood is fashioned, in the working looms and in the bakeries with their smell of fresh bread and patisserie. As John Cunningham in the Saturday Guardian, February 5 2000, writes. " From cockcrow to dusk, Essaouira works at weaving a web that manages to involve everyone"
Essaouira manages to combine its many different features in a special way: its four mile sandy beach, sunshine and blue skies most of the year, the numerous souks and craft shops, a great range of restaurants to suit all budgets, its relaxed attitude to alcohol, traditional hammams and contemporary thalassotherapy, local artists and galleries, the gnaoua musicians and excellent kite-surfing, windsurfing, boardsailing, horse riding and walking opportunities. The glue that holds all this together is the friendliness of the locals who are proud that their town has been rediscovered by the couples, families and independent travellers who respect its history and charm and want more than the standard package holiday.

Things to Do

The medina and beyond:

The medina or walled part of the town is traffic free except for porters'' barrows and bikes. Essaouira is compact, easily walked and one of its joys is to discover different alleyways to explore the town. Local maps are available.
Local tours to historic sites and country souks are available. Alternatively, cars can be hired by the day and longer, grand taxis are reasonably priced and there is a local bus service.

The sound of the mosques "call to prayer" can be heard all over the town. The apartments are close to the main mosque so please take precautions if you are noise sensitive.

Smoking is allowed in the apartment.

Entertainment:

Each apartment has a tv.

Eating and Living:

The separate kitchen has a cooker, fridge, cooking utensils and crockery.
The dining room/ lounge has a three-piece thuya wood suite or banquette and a table to dine from. The patio terrace has a large wrought iron tiled table, which seats four. It is the perfect location for breakfast or a candle lit evening meal drinking the award-winning local wine, la Gazelle Mogador. Tajines are available to order.

Less than 15 minutes drive away:

A womens argan oil cooperative. The ruins which inspired Jimmy Hendrix to write ' Castles in the Sand.'' Diabat where he lived.

Caroline says: "Location was very good though as warned you do get woken up at 4 in the morning by the call to prayer from the mosque immediately opposite. The cafe below closes about 1.00am This flat looked tired and could do with a thorough clean. There was not one clean glass in the apartment; no hot water tap in the kitchen or soap, brush etc to wash up with. Better to go to the cafes outside for anything to eat or drink. You have to walk through the double bedroom to get to the bathroom. Our big complaint was that the hot water only worked early in the morning or late at night, so we had to forget about a shower after we came back from the sandy beach before we went out to dinner. Apparently the water pressure int the medina is only sufficiently strong enough for the water heater to work at this time. Maid is meant to come everyday but failed to twice during our week long stay. "
