Vue d'Eglise
This lovely old house and the area of the Broceliande worked their magic on us – we had never intended to settle in Mauron – and we decided it was indeed going to be our ‘little bit of heaven’. There’s none of the bustle found in the coastal towns and cities, this is laid-back Brittany at its best – plenty to do and see, but at a lower key than the more commercialised North and South coasts.

It sits on the flank of the valley, with a view across to the town of Mauron and its distinctive ‘Johnny Walker’ church tower, about a mile distant.

The house is typically Breton (not French, as they will tell you) and part of a larger Longere that has its roots back in the 1600’s – it’s probably the oldest house in the Hamlet of just 5 properties. We loved it on first sight, as has everyone else that has visited and stayed. Even our two friendly old cats love it.

Downstairs it is again, typically local. The kitchen is large and we have kept many of the older features, whilst ensuring that it is a comfortable, functional cooking, dining and in the French way, a place to sit, chat and enjoy life’s great pleasures – food and wine.
Adjacent to the kitchen/diner is the lounge. Virtually the same size, it is light and airy and has French windows leading to the patio, gardens and splash pool. The shower room and toilet are in a dedicated extension.

Upstairs is a brand new renovation. There are two large bedrooms - one is a ‘double’ with fitted wardrobe, window seat and some exposed woodwork. Across the small landing is a large ‘childrens’ room, with one single bed and a bunk bed. This too is light and airy, has a fitted wardrobe and has high set ‘Velux’ windows for safety. If you have a baby in the party, we keep a cot available – just in case.

The house has both central heating and an open fireplace (we keep firewood on-site).

The Area
Mauron is in the Broceliande, an area rich with ancient history and legend. If you want the reasons for the King Arthur story this is where you come, because the Bretons will proudly tell you – it all started here! From ‘The Valley of No Return’ and Merlins Tomb’, to ‘Fairy Vivians Mirror’, the history is all around you just waiting to be explored.

There are historical and mythical sites dotted all round the area, a good starting point being Paimpont, inside the Broceliande Forest, with its lake, Abbey and grotto.

Josselin is not far – a ‘Little City of Character’ with an impressive looking Chateau overlooking the river (which is part of the Nantes/Brest canal). It has many beautiful mediaeval buildings and a very Breton market every Saturday morning.

Ploermel is the nearest town for ‘shopping’. It has just about everything you might be after, outside of the city shopping areas. It also has ‘The Blue Chapel’, reputed to be beautiful – and the ‘Lac au Duc’ (Dukes Lake), with all its facilities for boating, fishing and the most gorgeous – and overlooked - 9 hole golf course bounded by ‘The Hydrangea Path’.

Vannes has a superb area within the old city walls and the finest market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings - and is only 60 minutes by car, whilst Dinan, despite being ‘touristy’, is nonetheless worth a visit for its lovely old town and the view to the river from the ‘Jardin des Anglais’.

Rennes – the largest city in the region, with all it has to offer – is less than 60 minutes away.

As you will have already seen, personal transport is essential in rural Brittany and we advise that it is the best, if not the only way to get the most from this beautiful region.

Local Amenities
Mauron, despite being a small town, is well served with shops, bars, and a good restaurant or two – a new supermarket is just a mile away, another smaller one is open on Sunday mornings.

Walking/Cycling: Within sight of the house is the start of the ‘Voie Vert’ – a long distance foot and cycle path which runs almost to Vannes – about 50 odd kilometres. There are many other paths and cycle routes to be found, both in the forest and elsewhere. For those who wish to walk or cycle a one-way route, we can arrange to drop-off or collect at pre-arranged points.

Fishing: It’s a passion in France, you see ‘Les Pecheurs’ everywhere, from town ponds to the big lakes, and any stream or river in between. Licences must be obtained before you begin angling.

Golf: At Ploermel, just 15 minutes from us, is a gorgeous 9 hole course (soon to be 18 I am advised). It follows the edge of the ‘Lac au Duc’ and is better than any other ‘short’ course I have played in England. Surprisingly it is overlooked by most who holiday here in Brittany (they usually used the coastal courses) and is little used. It seems quite challenging and is very well kept – maybe it’s a secret I should keep to myself ?
