Originally a Casa Padronale, Villa Bastiola is situated on the hillside at Comunaglia, in the Upper Tiber Valley in Umbria on the border with Tuscany, and has stunning 360 degree views over the surrounding countryside and valleys. The first floor of the old farmhouse has been restored as an independent apartment retaining many of the original features including ancient chestnut and oak beams and terracotta flooring over three hundred years old, and a pietra serena fireplace and wardrobe. The apartment has two double bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms.

 

Camera Audrey overlooks the rolling Umbrian hillside towards Tuscany. There is a large double bed. The wardrobe has been created out of an original pietra serena bookcase that once stood to the right hand side of the original front door. The en-suite bathroom has many beautiful features including the original tiled arch that was once above the main doorway and is now part of the shower. A round ceramic basin rests on a slab of travertine marble and there is a toilet with bidet.

Camera Gregorio looks north towards the mountain of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and the Tiber Valley. There is a large double bed and wooden wardrobe. The en-suite bathroom has a large shower, toilet with bidet and round ceramic basin resting on a slab of travertine marble.

The main feature of the living room is the fantastic stone fireplace, over three hundred years old. With contemporary 3 seater leather sofa bed (converts to double bed) and armchair, Sky television and DVD, bookshelves and library, this is a wonderful place to relax. The original wooden staircase that used to lead up to the second floor is still in place, but is now housed in a rustic wooden cupboard providing useful storage space.

The large kitchen leads off of the living room and has a fully fitted contemporary kitchen in Shaker style with oven, dishwasher and fridge freezer. There is a table and chairs for dining and windows on both sides overlooking both the courtyard and the view across the valley.

Terrace - opposite the front door of the apartment is a small terrace with chairs where guests can sit or take breakfast in the warmth of the Umbrian sun.

Laundry - a laundry room is on the ground floor where there is a washing machine for guests' use.

Gardens - There is a small olive grove and a variety of fruit trees in the extensive gardens surrounding Villa Bastiola. Guests are welcome to use the gardens as their own, including the panoramic terrace.

Parking - There is plenty of room to park a car on the gravel area in front of the house.

 

Quite simply, this really is a beautiful part of Italy and remains unspoiled by tourism. Within a 15 minute drive of the apartment there is a wealth of restaurants, pizzerias and trattorias to choose from where you will find yourself dining with the locals! The best pizzas in the area are served at the local restaurant, 3 minutes walk down the hill from the Villa. Umbrian cuisine ranks amongst the best in the world, famous for its truffles, olive oil and Porcini mushrooms. If you visit in late September, you can take to the woods and hunt for mushrooms yourselves! Later, at the end of October, you can join in harvesting the olives!

Perfectly located for visiting some of the most beautiful towns and cities of Italy, Cortona, Siena, Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto and Lake Trasimeno are all within easy reach of the villa. The area has many lesser known medieval hilltop towns and villages just waiting to be discovered, like Montone, recently voted one of Italy's 10 prettiest hamlets!

Perugia is home to the annual international jazz festival, Umbria jazz, held in July, when some of the biggest names in the music business play, including Keith Jarrett and Elton John! Perugia also hosts Eurochocolate, a feast for chocolate lovers, when the streets are lined with stalls selling chocolate from all over Europe including "Baci", Italy's best loved chocolate kiss!

Or you can just laze the days away in the Umbrian sun, relaxing in the garden, taking in the panoramic view, listening to the breeze blowing through the olive grove...
 

The apartment comprises 2 bedrooms in total; 2 double, 2 of the bedrooms with en-suite facilities. The property also has 1 double sofa bed located in the Living Room. This gives room for up to 6 people. Bed linen and towels are provided for your use.

The apartment has 2 bathrooms and 2 WCs for your party's use. Central heating keeps you snug and warm.

The apartment has television video, dvd, satellite/cable. The music system will play cds.

There is room for 6 in the living room and 6 in the dining room. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

The apartment is in a quiet area but you may hear occasional noise. It has a west facing garden, a west facing patio area, panoramic views, a barbeque. If you are driving there is private parking with the outside areas of the house having external lighting.

The apartment is right beside walking.

Close to the apartment you will find swimming, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, tennis, a museum, a theatre/cinema, shopping areas, a restaurant, a food shop.

Within easy reach of the apartment you will find golf, historic sites.

Review submitted by non-Villarenters customer: We had a wonderful holiday at the apartment at Villa Bastiola in this beautiful part of Umbria. The luxury accommodation is what it says, luxury. Everything has been thought of for the comfort of the guests, with some thoughtful touches. The atmosphere is restful and relaxing. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you might need. The owners are a delightful couple who are friendly and welcoming and make you feel at home. They are full of information about the local area and further afield, if you want to visit Florence or Sienna etc. They can also recommend good local restaurants - there is fabulous restaurant 5 minutes walk away famous for the best pizzas in the area! The views from the Villa are amazing, over the surrounding hills to the mountains beyond. You can see why Umbria is called the green heart of Italy. We will certainly be returning for another visit.
