GREAT WEATHER
COSTA BLANCA enjoys the best climate in Spain, with on average over 300 days sunshine per year and less than 30 days rain,Moreover, the Torrevieja region is rated by the World Health Organisation as one of the healthiest places to live in the world. Partly because of the sunshine, but also because of the two huge salt lakes within 2km of the town centre. These salt lakes draw moisture from the air resulting in an extremely low humidity level.

Fun & Fiestas…

A fiesta is a party, a celebration, a thanksgiving. To a Spaniard, it symbolises the town in which they were born: its Patron Saint; its culture. Therefore fiestas are important to places, to individuals and to families, and so they're celebrated!
There are so many wonderful fiestas celebrated in the Costa Blanca that you are bound to see one whatever time of year you travel. There are elaborately decorated and traditional costumes, re-enactments of historical battles, some of the loudest and most colourful fireworks you will ever see and hear, and lots of delicious (and sometimes free) food and drink for all.
We've included a list of all the important fiestas in each village / town description where appropriate, so there really is no excuse for not rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in to one of the most enchanting and important areas of Spanish culture.
Here are some of the most important and most fun:
March 16th - 19th - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival - in the Villafranqueza District of Alicante.
19th March - Fallas de San José - Feast of St. Joseph in Calpe.
Two Thursdays after Easter Sunday - Peregrina de la Santa Faz - Santa Faz Pilgrimages in Alicante.
June 9th - 12th - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival - in the San Blas District of Alicante.
20th - 24th June - The Hogueras de San Juan - the Bonfires of St. John in Alicante.
16th - 20th July - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival in Javea.
Last week in July - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival in Villajoyosa.
12th - 14th August - Castell de L'Olla in Altea.
August 12th - 16th - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival - in the Altozano District of Alicante.
13th to 15th August - Misterio de Elche - Mystery of Elche.
August 24th - 28th - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival - in the José Antonio District of Alicante.
Last week in September - Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival in Altea.

Murcia, the largest city in the immediate area is only 45 minutes away and is well worth a cultural day out. It is a vibrant city that really comes to life in the evening. There is a wonderful Cathedral; old bull ring, shops bars, cafes and restaurants as well as the Football stadium. Murcia usually plays on a Sunday night.

.Places to visit
Torrevieja - is a coastal town in the south of Alicante province. It is situated within the district of Vega Baja, it has a population of 81,080 inhabitants and is contained within town boundaries which are adjacent to Guardamar del Segura to the north, Rojales and Benijófar to the west, Montesinos and San Miguel de Salinas to the southwest and the Orihuela beaches to the south.

The town of Torrevieja was founded administratively on 3rd March 1803 when King Charles IV decreed the removal of the administration of the Royal Salt Works from La Mata to the new area of Torre-viexa. The name of this settlement is owing to the many maritime watch towers that lined the Mediterranean coast and of which there is still a replica in the form of the Torre del Moro panoramic viewpoint. The removal of the administration of the Royal Salt Works to Torrevieja represents the commencement of the history of this town. This beginning is reflected in a population growth linked to activities such as fishing and salt exploitation, activities which have continued to today.
It is difficult to summarise the history of Torrevieja, but one event which stands out is that of the brutal earthquake which struck Torrevieja in 1829 and which lead to the complete reconstruction of the town under the direction of the military architect Larramendi. The population of Torrevieja subsequently experienced a demographic development which was consolidated during the last quarter of the 20th century. This is why the present town is so cosmopolitan and multi-cultural and has nearly 100,000 inhabitants from about 180 nationalities on the municipal register.
Torrevieja offers to its visitors a wide range of music concert programmes, theatre performances, exhibitions, conferences, choral recitals, competitions of international prestige within its winter, spring, summer and autumn cultural programmes, which are promoted by the Municipal Institute for Culture "Joaquin Chapaprieta" in coordination with the Cultural Society of Torrevieja casino, the Torrevieja Musical Union, the four choral societies and the more than fifty cultural associations of the town.
The main area for bars in Torrevieja is directly behind Burger King on the promenade. It is basically a back street with up to 40 bars spinning the latest balearic beats. It is worth noting that these only begin to pick up after 12.30am, when Irish bars are closing! THe nightclubs begin at 4am, if you wish to party all night. Both visitors and residents can find the best on offer in Torrevieja as far as nightlife is concerned, for every age and nationality. For young people, the Baluarte area counts on many small bars where you can enjoy a drink to the rhythm of the latest musical trends. And there are the cafeterias for a coffee or a drink at any time of day. That is why many people come from Murcia or Alicante to enjoy the nightlife of Torrevieja in the summer. Late at night you can visit the Avenida Habaneras where you will find more bars and the big discos in the outskirts of town. In Torrevieja you can also find English pubs, German beer saloons, or mexican restaurants where you can have a "mojito".
Murcia - is described as one of the most beautiful and historic in the country. The city stands on the banks if the river and enjoys all year round sunshine. It has the highest temperatures in the region. There is a great deal of Moorish influence in the city, not least of all the impressive city walls. After the reconquest, the 20 mosques in the city were turned into churches. The Cathedral is the most highly prized building in the city. The first foundation stone was laid in 1388 by Bishop Pedrosa. It took four centuries to complete. There are so many different styles and cultures within, including 23 different chapels.
As you wander through the city, there is a monumental building on every corner. Many are in pristine condition and those that aren't are being restored to their former glory. One building worthy of a mention is the casino (pictured below). Here in the 19th century, worthy citizens would sit to be admired like fish in a goldfish bowl. The palatial interior is quite amazing.
Among the other splendid buildings to see is the Bishop's Palace located near the Cathedral. Dated 1748 it has two wonderful facades. The Convent Church of Santa Ana is 18th century and is the third church to be built on this site, the original being1490. Here you can try the freshly baked cakes, made by the nuns and served through a revolving hatch. The Church of San Miguel stands on the site of an earlier church. The 18th century church has wonderful coloured altarpieces. The Almudi dates from 1602 and was formerly the storage place for public corn collected as tithes. It was reconditioned in 1985 and now houses the art centre and city archives.

In all, Murcia has everything to offer the visitor and you can almost certainly guarantee that no matter what time of year you visit, you will be wrapped up in some kind of fiesta or celebration. You will find the people pleasant and friendly towards tourists.
Murcia is a university city and as such has a large number of students. The university building is of huge proportions and demands time to examine closely its exterior. The area around the university has a wealth of lively bars and restaurants that are truly vibrant with life.
The seashore offers a wide range of activities from sailing to windsurfing and good diving. The local countryside is perfect for hiking, horse riding and cycling. From Cartagena you can easily explore the ancient city of Murcia, the coastal resorts of Mazarrón, Cala Cortina and Cabo de Palos or a little further north, the world famous resort of Mar Menor.

Guadalest - One of the most emblematic tourist images of the Costa Blanca is undoubtedly the picture formed by the freestanding elegant bell tower and the tunnel that provides access to the old centre of Castell de Guadalest, both located within a granite mass of striking appearance. Castell de Guadalest is the capital of the valley of the same name. It's bordered by Aitana, Serrella and Xortà mountains. The river Guadalest flows through the municipal area, interrupted by a reservoir near the town.

The village is unique as its old urban centre is located on the top of an outcrop, which is only accessed via a tunnel hollowed into the side of the rock. The area at the top of the rock includes the ancient city dungeon, the bell tower, Saint Josep castle where the current cemetery is located, and the recently restored Orduña House. A parish church and the Moorish fortified building called Alcozaiba are also located in this area. A more modern village, "el Arrabal", is located at the foot of the rocky promontory and here you can find many craft shops, museums and restaurants. Tourism has completely transformed Castell de Guadalest and its two hundred inhabitants have devoted themselves entirely to the provision of tourist services; agriculture, the traditional source of income of the village, has become a residual activity. The entire village has become a tourist attraction and there are a large number of gift and craft shops; the most interesting museums of the province are located here and its privileged position offers magnificent views over the valley and Castell de Guadalest's reservoir.

Kelly says: "The appartment itself was really lovely and with six adults and a baby we did not feel crowded at all. Would definately reccommend to our friends and family, the pool was really nice and most of the time we had it all to ourselves. The only thing you may not like is that there are no sunlongers around the pool so we had to sit on our towels which we didnt mind and the appartment has no air-con,(it was particularly hot when we went). Also not alot nightlife. The appartment is about a 10min walk from the plaza which can be quite expensive to eat out and there doesnt seem to be many cabs about to take you around. But the roof terrace has a BBQ so we did use that. Overall we had a really nice holiday very relaxing and would book it again. "
