Marina Alta - Denia/Javea villa holiday rentals details
Property description
'La Mimosa', so called because of a mimosa tree in the garden that grew as a seedling when we first bought the villa 15 years ago and is now fully grown. This is an older style typically Spanish villa of 120sqm internal area. The location of the villa in the Media Luna Urbanization is essentially very exclusive and exudes wealth, although the villa itself is more humble in appearance and has a country charm about it. Media Luna is perfect for strolls; surrounded by tall pines the air is cooled and fresh as it blows off the sea just 1 kilometer away. There is considerable distance and privacy between properties and with your own marble mosaic swimming pool with roman steps relaxation and tranquility are at the doorstep. The 1000sqm garden is currently underdevelopment as you will see on the photos, for this reason the rent is approximately 40% less than similar properties. This simply means that the sloping garden in yet fully developed as we intend to terrace the area later next year. You can choose to sit on the roof terrace, accessible by side steps, a great place to have morning coffee as the sun rises from the ocean and appears over the pine clad hills to the east. Alternatively the terrace below on the villa ground floor will catch the suns first rays, the terrace extends outwards towards the top of the garden and faces the terraced pool below and the mountainous interior off in the distance, perfect for sundowners and al fresco dinners. The terrace has a retractable awning for shading the hot midday sun. Steps lead down to the half terraced pool area, room enough for 4 sun loungers table and chairs and just falling in to the cool blue water. This is a very sunny southerly location and gets the sun all day, so unless you are a sun worshiper avoid coming in August. Paths lead along both sides of the villa. There is a car parking area within the property just off the road. A vertical folding garage door leads into a converted garage, now a store room which houses the garden furniture, boiler and washing machine. This side of the house is north facing and is mostly shaded throughout the day; the 2 main bedrooms face this side which makes for pleasant cool afternoon siestas. The mimosa tree has a lazy hammock strung across it. Green Laurel hedging encloses the garden area. The upstairs part of the house is on one level and comprises: Glazed naya leading off to the terrace, living room with tosca stone fireplace, bathroom, 2 bedrooms and the kitchen, just off the kitchen is an enclosed storeroom with an external entrance door. The terrace off the naya leads down tiled steps that open to the pool terrace. Right next to the pool terrace is the studio with its own walk in closet and bathroom. The naya has sliding glass windows which open out to the south facing garden, there are cane chairs and a cane table with ceramic tiled surface. A wrought iron gated archway leads into the living room with tables and chairs, coffee table, cane book case with selection of paperbacks, stereo CD/radio/cassette player, TV, DVD player, VHS player and portable A/C fan as well as ceiling light/fan. The bathroom has a bathtub and shower accessory, marble vanity sink unit, hairdryer. One bedroom has 2 pine beds that can stack to form bunk beds or separated individually, the other bedroom has a queen size metal frame bed, and both bedrooms have fitted pine wardrobes, chest of drawers and table lamps. The kitchen has a family sized refrigerator with freezer compartment, 3 hob gas cooker and oven with overhead extractor, microwave oven, kettle, water filter, toaster, cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking pots and pans, cooking utensils. The storage area just off the kitchen can be used for suitcases, cool boxes, beverages etc. Electric fans are in each room and are sufficient to cool the bedrooms at night. The downstairs studio is very large with 2 sofa beds, s/steel sink unit, refrigerator, bathroom with shower and walk in closet, its also 3 metres from the swimming pool. There is a portable A/C fan and a radio cassette player here. With 3 terraces to choose from you can enjoy different vistas, we like to sit on the upper garden terrace and sip G&T’s with tapas and watch the sun drop down off in the distant mountains, or watch the children splash about in the pool below.
A car is necessary for your holiday here and we recommend www.carjet.es for the best deal.
Area description
Media Luna (Half Moon) is close to all amenities and yet blissfully quiet and unspoiled, villas are dotted around the pine clad hills with no overcrowding seen in other urbanizations. The nearest road is some distance away so traffic noise is barely noticeable. The neighbors villas are mostly used as holiday homes and so remain empty for most of the year.
3 mins drive away is the nearest supermarket ‘Keith & Lyn’s’, just down the portichol road and right next to Toscamar complex, Just about everything can be found here and as the owners are English you’ll find English food and drink there, they also have an excellent bakery with superb hot freshly baked baguettes for breakfast. Right next to the supermarket is Toscamar holidy complex with a large pool, bar that serves food and a Spanish restaurant with great paellas; an Italian restaurant is next door. Live music including Flamenco is performed here during the summer. 150 metres further down the road just past the Farmacia is another restaurant ‘Antonios’ and is very popular, next door is a bank with an ATM, another supermarket and a bar. 2 mins from here is the popular Arenal sandy beach with an array of bars, restaurants, clubs, discos, shops, supermarkets, stalls, street theatre and fun fair, a great place for evening entertainment. Why not go there late at night and sit on the beach at sunrise as Javea, the dawn of Spain catches the first rays of the day. Or sit at a beach side café and have breakfast as you see the sun climbing over the distant horizon. The Arenal beach leads along all the way to the port and the charm of a whitewashed fishing village. Roam around here as the days catch is brought in and sent off to the local restaurants. Try the local grilled sardines with a garden salad, fresh bread and very cold dry white wine. Many restaurants are located at the port, our favorite is ‘Cande’, a family run place that serves traditional Spanish food with a Menu del dia (menu of the day) for 5 Euros including wine. Banks, clinics, shops etc. are all here with more to be found just up the hill in the main town where the indoor and weekly markets are.
Heading right from Media Luna towards Granadella, 2 mins away and down a step hill is the pebble beach of Portichol, a great place to snorkel, 2 restaurants and bars are here. 5 mins further on the winding road will lead to Granadella beach, a real beauty spot with sheltered bathing and a charm of its own surrounded by steep hills and forest. 3 restaurants and a beach bar are here.
Javea description
There's a lot to tell about Javea, or Xabia in Valenciano. Like for instance that the World Health Organisation named it as one of the healthiest climates in the world or that there are more recorded hours of sunshine per year on this little point of land than in any other place in Spain. That is obviously of importance and one of the main reasons why the northern Europeans visit Javea but there is much much more to this charming little town.
Javea's also long been called 'Amanecer de Espana', Dawn of Spain. This because it's situated on the most eastern tip of south Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, every morning the rising sun is seen first here in Javea before setting off to light and warm the rest of the country. One day San Antonio, another day San Martin, or Cabo de la Nao sees the first golden rays. But always day dawns over that blue sea, enriching the life of the old Spanish fishing community.
There is a sense of contentment, pleasure and ease. This is partly because Javea continues to be a working port and not just a tourist mecca; but also because it is a place where people from many parts of northern Europe come to live permanently, not just a few weeks a year. There is much history here, with the influence of the Moors much in evidence, with perhaps the ancient San Bartolome Church containing the soul of the village. One of its inner walls was there in 1244 when King Jaime El Conquistador defeated the Moors here, whilst the outside wall is pockmarked by fusillades of the Civil war seven centuries later.
Then there are the wonderfully fresh fruit and vegetables, the wine of all qualities and prices, the incredibly beautiful almond blossom in February, the outside markets, the fields of orange trees producing their blossom in March which perfumes the whole valley and surroundings , literally hundreds of restaurants (where to pay more than a £10 a head is a special occasion) and then of course always the clear clear air. Halfway between Alicante and Valencia airports, less than an hour from each via a modern Autopista, but far enough away to never see an aeroplane. Centrally placed to reach the cities of Madrid or Barcelona, to travel down to the Costa del Sol or just travel 10 minutes inland into the hills that surround Javea.
Of course there are the tourists, but unlike most of the resorts on the Costas of Spain, the vacationers here prefer to rent a villa with a private pool, or an apartment with a communal pool. There are very few hotels in Javea, and those that are here do not cater for package holidays. Importantly, the Spanish have taken Javea to their hearts, and make up a large percentage of the visitors. Especially the people from Madrid and Valencia love to come here to holiday and celebrate their fiesta's. There are a number of areas of Javea where people have chosen to live, whether it is an apartment or town house in the port or near the beach, or a villa in an urbanization or the surrounding countryside.
Javea is no longer a hidden paradise. Clubs, restaurants, the Parador, the Javea Golf Course, and our proud Club Nautico do all they can to make us known; as does the annual Tourist Feria. The shooting range on La Plana, riding stables, tennis courts, cricket pitch, bowling clubs, undersea diving facilities - exist for the pleasure and profit of all. Many local clubs exist and walking in the area is a favourite past-time. But above all, Javea has managed to keep it's identity and never turned into a hollow seasonal place with high-rises full of strangers. Then last but not least there's our big friend El Montgo. The mountain just above Javea which stands guard over us all (and our wonderful weather) and from certain angles looks like a sleeping elephant. In 1987 it's pine forest slopes were decreed a Parque Natural consisting of some 2,150 hectares, making sure that it's beauty would never be lost.
There remains much more to tell and we'll mention some more details on the other pages on specifics in Javea but in the end we can only suggest you visit Javea yourself to find out first hand about this jewel of the Spanish coast.
Note: The above was inspired and sometimes based on extracts from the wonderful book “Javea/Xabia - A Year in the life of a Spanish Town” by Charlene Quince, who lived in Javea for over 20 years. The book is a beautiful account of the area, the history, the festivals and not least the people, punctuated with some wonderful photographs by Billie Cook that capture the beauty of this special part of Spain. It's available in every bookshop in Javea.
