Denia
Denia is a large picturesque medieval Spanish town nestled between the coastal hills and orange grooves of the Costa Blanca at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying 320 days of sunshine a year with comfortable temperatures all year. Denia is situated on the northern section of the Costa Blanca mid-way between Alicante and Valencia that are both one-hour away by motorway, the perfect setting for a great holiday. It is blessed with a mild year round climate, voted by the World Health Organisation as having the healthiest climate in Europe, making it ideal whenever you visit. The average year round temperature is 18 C, so it is no wonder the locals have put up a monument to the weather.
A holiday in Denia is to stroll along the long sandy beaches; walk along the rocky coastal cliffs or a mountain path on the Montgo National Park; walk or cycle along the extensive coastal promenade or rub shoulders with the local fishermen; wander the narrow streets of the old town; or stretch out on part of the 20km of the many and varied blue flag beaches near the town. To the north of the town there are fine long sandy beaches and shallow waters, whilst further south lie a series of small coves along the sandy and rocky coast, known as Les Rotes, a paradise for snorkelling, fishing & scuba diving.
As well as being rich in natural beauty, Denia also has deep historical roots, ranging from ancient cavemen, Iberians, Romans, Greeks, Moors and Christians. The town is renowned for having the most fiestas in Spain, to celebrate this colourful past. Almost every month the town celebrates with extravagant carnivals, concerts, processions, markets and fireworks. However it is always possible to escape the crowds and find serenity in any of the quiet back streets or coves along the coastline and immerse yourself in the Spanish culture that still exists and is the backbone of Denia’s way of life today.

Five Spectacular Local Attractions to Visit
Jalón Valley (Starts 22 kms inland) - Famous for its picturesque groves of Citrus and Almond trees and littered with ancient Spanish villages where you can find the really 'old-style' Spanish restaurants, which still serve genuine fare cooked over wood fires at incredibly low prices.
Valencia (90 Kms north) - Spain's third City. A visit to the Old City is a must for those that love rich old cities like Paris, Prague & Rome with such treasures as The Virgin Square, Queens Square, the Turia Fountain, Marquis de Dos Aquas Palace, magnificent Natural History & Fine Arts Museums, one of Spain's largest and oldest Cathedrals, a truly superb bullring, the ancient bastion from which "El Cid" rode forth to turn back the Moslem hordes and so much more to reflex the richness & culture of Spain’s history.
For the shoppers, the city centre is very large, with a great many stores and speciality shops. A very large shopping mall has just been opened with three major department stores and some 217 shops all in the one air-conditioned building. On the outskirts is the Marina that is now buzzing with the heats over the next 2 years for the America’s Cup Challenge.
Guadalest (32 Kms inland) - An ancient fortified town perched high on a cliff top, with little shops along the steep, stepped, winding streets selling souvenirs, leather goods, local weave material, glassware and the like. There is a steep winding path, up the rocky pinnacle that dominates the town, to a little open chapel at the top. If you take the route through CALLOSA D'EN SARRIA, you will pass through some splendid mountain country.
Guadalest also has a splendid lake that you can drive around by taking the turning just before the town (-marked "Embalse de Guadalest"), crossing the dam and arriving at the town from the back end via a couple of other villages.
Alicante (80 Kms south) - The provincial capital and a city of about 350,000, with excellent beaches, seafront and promenade, Paseo Maritimo paved with beautiful local marble and lined with Palm-trees right at the edge of the city. The splendid Santa Barbara castle is set on a hill dominating the city with access from a cliff railway. There are many fine public buildings set in majestic squares with fountains or along wide avenues lined with palm-trees and subtropical plants. A magnificent old cathedral and fine traditional bullring are further attractions of this great city. Alicante is brilliant for shopping - with department stores open all day long (no siesta) - and a superb selection of fashion boutiques and speciality shops (jewellery, fine leather-work, crystal, ceramics etc.).
Benidorm (50 kms south) - Spain's largest and oldest holiday resort but now enjoying a totally new lease of life after a massive investment programme and tidy up. Most visitors who choose the area for their holiday would not even consider Benidorm for a visit however it has changed a lot and can be worth a visit for it’s two very long smooth sandy beaches and perfect palm and bar lined esplanade. Once the sun goes down, the place really comes to life and, for sheer endless variety; there are few cities in Europe that can compete..

Dear Nigel,
Back home and the washing just about done! We had a very good week and think your apartment is super.
Thank you again, we enjoyed our visit to Denia.
Regards,
Janey Orr - Aug 07
Dear Nigel
We have been meaning to write and say thank you, sorry! We had a great holiday. The weather was great. We liked the apartment and thought it was nicer than the advert projected. Also we liked its situation, just back from the front, but within walking distance of the centre of Denia. There were very few apartments occupied during our week, so extremely quiet around the pool.
We visited Javea, during a fiesta week, so we saw an open air concert and also saw the bull run where teenagers try and outsmart the bull and dive into the harbour. We cycled to Javea and back using the mountain trail which was fun and wonderful to see real spanish farms with olive groves and cypress trees. We also went sailing and spent a day in Valencia.
We ate out a few times, our best meal was in one of the harbour restaurants which was lovely, more upmarket than those on the coast at Denia which we didn't try. Denia felt much more spanish than Javea.
