Marbella to Gibraltar apartment to rent details
El Mirador del Mar de Casares
El Mirador is a small, gated development (43 apartments) situated in an elevated coastal position giving spectacular 180 degree sea views, whilst behind rises the great bulk of the Sierra Bermeja. It is built in a pretty “pueblo” style, white with tiled roofs and winding walkways.
There is an attractive communal swimming pool, with changing rooms and a good supply of sun beds, but if you want to explore this fascinating area of Spain then this is an ideal location. There is also an allocated parking space for each apartment, which means that you have no worries about where to leave your car.
The Apartment
We regard this apartment as our Spanish home and have furnished and equipped it to a very high standard.
All linen is provided, with the exception of beach towels, and a weekly cleaning and linen laundry service is included in the hire cost.
The apartment sleeps four and has marble floors throughout, two terraces, lounge with dining area, one en suite double bedroom, a twin bedroom with adjacent bathroom, a separate shower room, fully equipped kitchen and a utility room. There are air conditioning/heating units in all main rooms.
The welcoming hallway leads into the lounge, which is furnished in elegant modern style. At one end there is a two-seater sofa and two large armchairs arranged around a coffee table. There are built-in bookshelves with cupboards under, and a selection of CDs and books - including guide books. Also in this area is the TV, with capacity to play both video and DVD/CD, as well as a surround system. This room does have a fireplace, but it is strictly decorative!
The dining area has a large table with its accompanying chairs, and the room is lit by any combination of halogen spotlights and standard or table lamps.
Large glass doors slide open onto the lower level terrace, which faces the sea. It is partly shaded and provides a pleasant retreat in the hottest weather for those who are not total sun worshippers. It is furnished with a table and four chairs and is ideal for al fresco meals. The terrace has lights and also power points and there is a built-in chimney for use with the charcoal burning barbecue or the electric plancha.
Also leading from the hall are the kitchen and the shower room. The tiled kitchen on your left has plentiful cupboard space and is fully equipped with electric oven and ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge/freezer (with fast-freeze facility). A door leads from the kitchen to the utility room. The shower room on the opposite side of the hall includes a wc and hand basin.
Bedrooms and bathrooms are on the first floor. The master bedroom has a double bed with bedside tables, and is well provided with wardrobe space as there are two large built-in wardrobes with lots of hanging space and drawers. The en suite bathroom has bath with shower over, bidet, wc and a double basin unit with cupboards under.
Sliding glass doors open onto another terrace, which also faces the sea. There are two sun loungers and as this terrace is a real suntrap it is ideal for topping up your tan. However, if you do need some shade there is a sun umbrella available and also a roller blind which will shield half the length of the terrace.
The second bedroom has twin beds with table between. It has a large built-in wardrobe and there is a bathroom adjacent with the same configuration as the en suite except that it has a single hand basin.
Please note that because of the steeply sloping nature of the site the apartment is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.
The surrounding area and further afield
The area is an ideal location to explore the far south of Spain, either along the coast to Marbella and Puerto Banus to the east or to Puerto de la Duquesa, Sotogrande and Gibraltar to the west and on to Cadiz and Tarifa, the wind-surfers’ paradise.
Estepona is the major town of the immediate area, 10 minutes drive in the Malaga direction, with its attractive marina (Puerto Deportivo), full of bars, restaurants and shops, and its weekly Sunday morning market in the Puerto which sells ceramics/leather goods/paintings and much more. Despite recent development Estepona retains its Spanish character, and the old town area is an attractive jumble of narrow streets with low-rise white buildings, many festooned with colourful flowers. It boasts long, sandy, blue flag beaches with excellent facilities including beach bars (chiringuitos), showers and changing rooms.
If you are a shopaholic you should be happy here. There is a large selection of shops selling everything from souvenirs to pets - via excellent shoes, smart clothes, etc. etc. There is also a very busy weekly market on Wednesday mornings.
The nearest town to the apartment is Sabinillas, a few minutes drive away in the Cadiz direction. Sabinillas was once a small fishing village but has now grown into a thriving (but not large!) seaside town. There are three supermarkets there and a large selection of other shops, bars and restaurants. A particular attraction is the promenade, lined with restaurants, bars, cafes and ice cream parlours, where both residents and visitors gather to meet friends over a drink or a meal, or just to enjoy the “passeo” in the cool of the evening. There is a large street market on Sunday mornings which sells pretty well anything and everything. Head towards the town and follow the road signs Rastro Domingo – if you enjoy markets this is for you.
Only a little further beyond Sabinillas is the popular and well established resort of Puerto de la Duquesa. This is extremely popular with visiting holidaymakers, who throng the restaurants and bars around the port. There must be a style of food to suit everybody.
If you continue westwards, perhaps to visit Gibraltar, it is worthwhile making a detour to the town of San Roque (“Gibraltar in Exile”), home to the descendants of the original - Spanish - inhabitants of the Rock. The old part of town has some very handsome houses, some good tapas bars and an excellent Tourist Information Office – although seemingly not many tourists!
Eastwards, beyond Estepona, are the glamorous destinations of Marbella and Puerto Banus.
The White Villages and Ronda
No trip to southern Spain would be complete without visiting some of the famed “pueblos blancos”. There are a number of “rutas” through the white villages - local Tourist Offices should be able to help with some leaflets.
The nearest white village to the apartment is our namesake, Casares, 14km away on the winding, steadily climbing road. Spectacularly sited and much photographed it is well worth a visit.
Beyond Casares, up some 10km of hairpin bends, is the historic village of Gaucin. Sited in a saddle between a mountain (Hacho) and a 10th century Moorish castle, it has tremendous views down the Genal valley to Gibraltar and North Africa. There are several good restaurants in the village. The road from Gaucin to Ronda takes in a further four villages, the prettiest of which is Benalauria which has a very attractive restaurant. In the opposite direction (Algeciras) there is Jimena de la Frontera with its castle.
Do visit Ronda. A splendid city, with a spectacular entrance across the Puento Nuevo which spans a gorge almost 300 ft. deep. It is an ancient town and, among other historical remains, has one of the best preserved examples of Arab baths in Spain. It also has one of the oldest and most prestigious bull rings in Spain, and even if you don’t approve of the bullfight do go into the bull ring. It is a strange feeling to stand in the centre of that circle of sand. As ever, there are bars and restaurants galore – on both sides of the bridge – and plenty of shops for browsing.
Sports and Leisure Activities
Swimming and sailing are readily available. For swimmers, the apartment is only a 15 minute stroll away if you prefer sea bathing to the pool; boats can be hired at both Puerto de la Duquesa and the Estepona Puerto Deportivo; there are also dolphin watching cruises available from the Blue Dolphin chiringuito on Estepona beach and from Gibraltar. There is also tennis at Calahonda.
The surrounding country is popular with both walkers and bird watchers, and if you enjoy riding there are two riding schools on the coastal strip (the Sotogrande Club Hipico and the Escuela del Arte Ecuestre de Costa del Sol to the east of Estepona). For a more informal setting there is a riding stable 7 km. outside Gaucin, in the direction of Jimena de la Frontera. It is run by an English couple who bravely took their horses to Spain some five years ago to start the yard. They give lessons if required and take rides in the campo.
And then there’s golf… There are already 60+ golf courses on the Costa del Sol, with many new venues being prepared. The apartment is in the heart of the “Costa del Golf”, with four courses nearby and more being developed all the time. The splendid new Dona Julia and Finca Cortesin courses are a mere 3 or 4 minutes drive away, and two long established Pay & Play courses (Estepona and La Duquesa) only 10 minutes. The big guns of Valderama, Sotogrande, San Roque, La Reserva and Almenara are only 25 minutes off. For a complete contrast there is the charming little Los Almendros par 3 9-hole course, cleverly created in a pretty valley a short drive north of Estepona into the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja. It provides a test for your short game – and a round can be followed by a good lunch in the delightful clubhouse restaurant. Or just go for a day out, the views and the lunch!
Details of these things and many more are contained in the house book.
The Costa del Sol really does have something for everyone. Beaches, mountains, historic towns and simple villages, the chance to lounge in the sun or to walk, climb or ride (bike or horse!) in the vast open countryside. Not to mention the chance to sample different styles of food, different wines, and a very different outlook on life from that of Northern Europe. If you haven’t yet been, do try it!

Marbella to Gibraltar apartment to rent reviews
Review submitted by non-Villarenters customer: Thank you so much for allowing us to experience living in your home. This was our third holiday in Estepona, and your property was by far the most lavish and beautiful that we have stayed in... It has every conceivable appliance to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Also, your 'welcome pack' was gratefully received!
Your photographs and description can never do your home the justice it deserves...
Your property is not a 'holiday rental' it is a real home from home in the sunshine, and I would love the opportunity to be able to take my family there again in the coming years.

We had a great holiday again... The complex was again very quiet, a few more people by the pool than last year but no noise or problems of any sort.
I will be very happy for you to add my comments to the Holiday-Rentals website. I am very happy to say that we have been two years running and would recommend the apartment and the complex.
