San Pedro de Alcántara

San Pedro de Alcántara is the last really true Spanish town filled with charm and culture, amidst the tourism boom of the rest of the Coast. Situate just west of Puerto Banus and Marbella and 20 km to the east of Estepona on the coast. Just after San Pedro on the main road you can take a road to the mountain to Benahavis, a beautiful village known to have the best restaurants on the Costa, and where many artists live all year round, you can take a walk on the village and find many interesting shops where you can find unusual and very nice pictures, sculptures, clothes and many others things. On the other side of San Pedro you can take a road to the ancient town of Ronda, one of the most spectacular towns in Andalusia.

San Pedro old town

San Pedro’s old town is a genial and charming town with small winding streets, a beautiful main square, picturesque Andalucia houses and traditional Spanish architecture. Visit the central plaza with the palms tree and its gracious Parish church, constructed in 1866 by the Marques del Duero. The building is colonial style. Today restored and housing the Deputy Mayor's office. Walk around in the surrounding narrow streets and you will find many small shops, boutiques, old cafes and Spanish bars. Every Thursday there is the traditional local market at the feria ground. It offers you fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, shoes, leader, local Andalusia products, and the usual tourist products in a friendly atmosphere.

San Pedro de Alcántara

If you walking from the centre of the old town to the sea side along the Avenida del Marques del Duero which is a particularly attractive wide boulevard flanked by palm trees will you find the new development of Nueva Alcántara near the beach, attractive apartment buildings, with is popularly by the foreign residents an international school and various commercial businesses. The Alcántara Plaza shopping centre, open in 2005, will house a large supermarket and multi-screen cinema.

The Beach and Paseo.

Nearly 5km beaches have San Pedro and along it is a modern wide promenade with many excellent chiringuitos (Spanish restaurants which all serve delicious seafood). The beach has the blue flag for is clean water together with the wide and sandy beach, so it is perfect for families with kids.

Culture

-The Paleochristian Balisilica de Vega del Mar Church and Necropolis, dates back to the 4th century and was discovered in the 10th century. In and around the Basilica there is a Cemetery, with some two hundred tombs of various types, and it is located in the woods at the beach, directly in front of the town. A little further west along the beach to Guadalmina is the restored remains of the Roman Bathhouse – LasBovedas or the Vaults. That was built in the third century. It consists of an octagonal building containing a central nucleus with seven rooms around it. There is an octagonal pool in the centre. The purpose is thought to be public baths or a water storage place at the end of an aqueduct. Very mush of San Pedro`s history is connected with Marbella´s history.

Sport in San Pedro.

San Pedro is perfect located if you like golf. You have more than 10 golf courses in 5 minutes driving. In San Pedro you have Guadalmina Club de Golf with two 18-holes courses. Close to San Pedro is Motemayor, Marbella Club, El Paraiso, Los Flamingos, Atalaya, La Quinta, Los Arqueros and La Zaragata. San Pedro has also a horse riding school, Lakeview Equestrian Centre, which organises trips for experienced riders and learners along some of the tracks in the hills around the San Pedro area.
