Things to do in the Village.
Walking:
Ballycotton is famous for its cliff walk, which extends over 5 miles of cliff to the beach at Ballytrasna. The cliff walk starts at the cliff top car park which is reached via a road swinging right uphill from the village just before the pier. At the car park where the walk starts there is an information board, entitled Ballycotton Cliff Walk. A concrete stile gives access to the pathway. There are many stiles on the route, much more convenient than climbing walls or ducking under electric fences while, at the same time, keeping farm animals from wandering. The route is a narrow foot-worn track along the cliff top, with the sea far below and the air coming off the Atlantic fresh and stimulating
The walk passes Ballytrasna and then turns inland at the small cove at Ballyandreen, to make a loop back to Ballycotton. The local development committee hopes this path can be extended - but for the moment it is a very pleasant 5 miles, with a shorter route home of 3 miles, through Ballytrasna.
Pitch & Putt :
The village pitch & putt couse is just 5 minutes walk. Clubs are in the cottage, and Green Fees are just €5 which is paid at the club house.
Bird Watching:
Ballycotton and the surrounding areas are a well known haven for birdwatchers. An information board, depicts the local bird species at the start of the cliff walk. It is one of eighteen plaques erected at prime bird viewing sites on the new East Cork Bird Trail between Cork and Youghal.
Deep Sea Angling:
The summer season is from May to September. The main catches are, Blue Shark, Pollock, Ling, Conger, Cod ,Spotted Dog. From the end of October to the end of February, is ideal for big Cod (20 Ibs+), Hake and Coalfish. For conservation, most fish are returned alive to the water and certain species are tagged for scientific purposes. Favorite angling-marks can be reached within 20-40 minutes. The mix of rocky ledges, sand and coral accounts for the variety of fish available. A number of boats, with experienced skippers, from 23 ft to 36 ft are available. Rods and tackle can be hired. Normal angling time is from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm.
Shore Angling :
Angling from the pier for Mackerel, Plaice, Sole, Conger, Flounder Ray etc. River fishing is the Blackwater(in Lismore) and Bride Rivers (in Tallow) for Salmon and Trout, are about one hours drive. There is also Trout fishing at Loughaddera.
