Grand Canava is located in an ideal location in Oia, the most beautiful and rich village of Santorini, famous for having the traditional architecture of its buildings maintained to a strict standard. The property is having direct access to the beginning of the marble paved pedestrian which takes visitors through the traditional Oia settlement and branches out to picturesque cobblestoned alleys that expand down the multilayer caldera cliff. It passes through the heart of Oia, with its charming little shops, cafés, artist workshops, village bakery, sweet shops, taverns, tinny romantic bars and cafes and ends up in the northwestern tip of the island to the castle ruins and one of the most famous sunsets in the world. Oia hosts a cultural centre with art galleries as well handicrafts, souvenir and jewelry shops and even an artist workshop for making church icons. After a 12 minute stroll, you reach the famous Santorini sunset spot and the Oia castle ruins. From there, 220 steps below there is Ammoudi fishing village, also accessible by car (5 minutes drive) which is an excellent place to find fresh fish and even have a swim if one fancies a dive from its rocky beach.  

Grand Canava has been newly restored, in 2007, from a traditional 1868 canava (wine making) dwelling, carved into the volcanic rock face, to create an “Yposkafo”, now the most sought after cave-house residence type in Santorini.. The use of natural materials, like “pori”, red volcanic pumice rock in the exterior window frames, colors that blend with the surrounding geology and restoring with respect to the original canava architecture has resulted in an authentic and beautiful Santorinian residence. Grand Canava enjoys uninterrupted panoramic views of the caldera, volcano and blue see and the white traditional Cycladic houses of the surrounding settlement. You can stay and lounge all day by the pool, take a dive or a refreshing Jacuzzi and enjoy al fresco lunch or dinning in the covered patio with its unparalleled view.  

Grand Canava is an amazing living abode. High vaulted ceilings create a naturally cool interior, as large windows allow for sun light and traditional “parathira” top window openings allow for the sea breeze to circulate the vaulted ceiling rooms. Grand Canava is offered as an entire residence that can comfortably accommodate up to 12 people and it can be best described as a villa with three distinct living areas that we refer to as east, west and main canava, all with separate courtyard entrances for better privacy and with autonomy in terms of amenities.

West canava can accommodate up to 2 persons in a very specious vaulted bedroom with queen size iron bed, a sitting area with a wooden table for two, fully equipped kitchen and a cave style private bathroom with walk-in shower. There is a table and summer umbrella in the courtyard offering lounging with magnificent view of the pool, clear blue sky and the sea filled volcano caldera.

East canava can accommodate up to 4 persons and comprises two vaulted bedrooms, a sitting room and kitchen with view to the pool and the island caldera.

The master bedroom is at the back carved into the rock with a romantic queen size platform canopy bed, secluded as a separate living area with its own indoor windows and door, in a fashion typical of traditional santorinian houses. With all windows open the bedroom can enjoy light from the outside and a view into the blue while closing the inner windows and door provides maximum privacy.

The second bedroom is situated at the front end and has a double iron bed that gives direct view to the pool and clear blue sky just from the edge of its pillows. Both rooms have access to a spacious sitting room with a wooden table for four and a fully equipped kitchen and they share a luxurious large cave style bathroom with bathtub and shower. There is a wooden table and summer umbrella in the courtyard as well as loungers for sunbathing by the pool.

The main canava can accommodate up to 6 persons in 3 separate bedrooms and is built in two levels in the middle of the east and west sides of the original Canava.

A very spacious dining room shed with ample natural light welcomes our guests with its large monastery style table which can comfortably sit a party of 12. The kitchen room is designed as a separate area with easy access to the dining premises and is adjacent to the wine storage. A home entertainment corner features comfortable sofa, TV, DVD player, CD stereo system and a collection of movies, books and board games.

An impressively large bedroom with a platform king size bed and dressing area and a romantic room, with double iron bed, cozily snug under its own cave style dome are on the ground floor. Both rooms have each their own private luxury bathrooms.

At the front side, an indoor staircase carved out of the rock leads to the upper level. The high vaulted ceiling bedroom there has a queen size iron bed, a separate small fridge, its own bathroom with walk-in shower and its own private large verandah with wooden table for six, a summer umbrella and lounger, offering an even more panoramic view of the caldera.

Theowner’s persistence in the use of techniques inherited from the past, like “patito” for the bathroom wall interiors, the two cylindrical troughs preserved from the wine making times of the dwelling that now make for an intriguing interior floor lighting design and rocks standing out in some of the walls all contribute to making Grand Canava’s a trully authentic traditional santorinian residence. As a final touch, original artwork, antique and tasteful traditional style furnishings make for an elegant and homely ambiance which is discretely complemented with all the comforts expected of a home at modern times.

The villa comprises 6 bedrooms in total; 6 double and 2 cots, 5 of the bedrooms with en-suite facilities. . This gives room for up to 12 people. Bed linen and towels are provided for your use.

The villa has satellite/cable. The music system will play cds.

There is room for 3 in the living room and 10 in the dining room. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.
