Gainsborough
Gainsborough started as an important wool centre in the middle ages and has grown steadily since. It achieved Port status in 1841 and you still see working barges catching the tide going past the house. There are several buildings of note in Gainsborough, the most famous being the magnificent 15th century manor house. This timber framed building was built between 1460 and 1480, and is well worth exploring, ask for the childrens questionnaire for added fun. The library was built in 1905 and is one of just a few Carnegie libraries still in use. The Parish Church of All Saints with its eight pinnacled tower is the only surviving example of a grand 18th century city church in the county.
A good way to see the town is a 30 minute horse and carriage ride, starting from Marshalls Yard on Bank Holidays and Sundays.
