On the western edge of the Cevennes National Park at the junction of the Dourbie and Trevezel rivers stands Cantobre built on the site of a 12th century Castle. The south-facing village is situated some 580 meters above sea level, which gives it clear hot sunny days with cooler pleasant evenings.

The castle was destroyed during the religious wars of the 17th century and the present village has evolved over the centuries as a home for the peasants who worked the terraced hillsides and in the local small mines. The village suffered in the middle of the last century from de-population brought about by the end of mining and the general movement from countryside to town.

In the second half of the last century water, telephones and reliable electricity were brought to the village, and over the past 30 years the village has again blossomed with the 25 houses of the village being steadily rebuilt, renovated and modernized. The whole village still retains its ancient aspect, which is tightly controlled by the ’Batiments de France’.

The village skyline is dominated by its 12th Century village church, which, standing at the apex of the village, overlooks the village square with its restaurant and bar. The village remains a working community with the village gardens spilling down the hillside below the village towards the Dourbie River.

The village has no shops, however, several visiting tradesmen who supply its daily needs serve the village. The local small town, Nant, is only a 10-minute drive away and is amply served with shops, bars and restaurants. The nearest large town, Millau, is 25 Km away through the Gorges of the Dourbie and has all the facilities you would expect from a town dedicated to the tourist. Millau has a large weekly market on Fridays, a flea market on Sundays and in the summer a food market each Monday evening when the local population gather in the town centre to eat the local specialties. There are a large number of restaurants and bars in Millau and it has a number of supermarkets.

The location of Cantobre is ideal for the tourist who wants a special holiday amid the spectacular scenic countryside of southern Aveyron and Languedoc. The opportunities for sightseeing are endless with new vistas and delights around every bend in the road. Go just 20km south and you drop down from the heights of the Central Massif into the world’s largest wine growing region of Languedoc/Roussillion with over 950 wine producers giving numerous opportunities for sampling their wares. Go 20km north and you meet the river Tarn with its famous 300meter deep gorges and its ancient spectacular towns and villages.

Southern Aveyron is famous for the quality of its local produce. Near by Cantobre is Roquefort famous for its cheese and a visit to its caves, in which the cheese is matured, is a must.

Cantobre is located in an area of high limestone plateaus and deep river valleys and there are numerous caves, a number of which are open to the public. In the area rivers disappear underground only to reappear elsewhere.

Historic sites abound. In the middle ages the area was a major crossroads for armies on the way to the Crusades and near Cantobre lie a number of preserved fortified villages built by the Knights Templar and Hospitallar. The villages, which are still living communities, stage jousting and feasting displays in the summer to give visitors a taste of old Aveyron and life in the Middle Ages.

All our local villages, like all villages in France, have their local fetes where visitors can mingle and join in the festivities with the locals.

The location of Cantobre in southern Aveyron makes it possible for the holiday maker to visit the famous cities of Avignon, with its papal palaces, Nimes, with its Roman ruins, and Albi, the red city, with its famous cathedral, all of which are within a couple of hours drive of your holiday home.

From the village you can take a gentle stroll down to the Dourbie River where you can swim, picnic or barbecue on its banks. Take the one hour walk or your car and visit ancient Nant and watch the world go by, swim in Nants heated outdoor swimming pool or play tennis on its public courts.

The local area is a paradise for walkers. There are numerous marked walks of various lengths and difficulty. Take a walk along the river to Nant or climb the ancient paths to the high mountain plateaus of the Causses (Limestone Moors). Why not combine your walk with a fossil hunt amongst the limestone rocks.

You can fish in the local Class 1 rivers (Dourbie, Tarn & Jonte) for the local trout, or you can drive for an hour to the coast for sea fishing while your family goes swimming or shopping at the local market.



Cycling is a popular pastime in the area with the road from Cantobre to Millau alongside the Dourbie being a pleasant ride. You can, for a different experience, travel a few kilometres to Cornus where you can ride the specially adapted bikes along the rails of an old railway.

If water sports are your pleasure you are amply catered for. There is windsurfing and sailing on the local lakes; canoeing, rafting or kayaking on the local rivers; swimming in the local rivers, the swimming pool in Nant or in the Olympic size pool in Millau.

Millau is a major centre for paragliding, and as well as experienced fliers, first timers can try it in tandem with an experienced instructor. The local hills offer the opportunity, under expert supervision, to experience rock climbing, abseiling, caving and mountain biking. For the less physical challenged there are a number of ’ Fôret de Acrobats’ (walking in tree tops) located alongside the Tarn near Millau.

Finally you must visit the newly opened ‘ Viaduct of Millau’ on the A75. Designed by the British Architect Sir Norman Foster it is the highest bridge in the world and is higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Les Olives, Les Plos, Cantobre.

A semi-detached stone village house sleeping up to 8 people plus either a small childs bed or cot in the sleepy hamlet of Les Plos , a couple of kilometres from Cantobre.
The house is located in and overlooks the Trevesel Gorges on the edge of the Cevennes National Park.
The house is on 3 levels. The ground floor has 3 bedrooms and a bathroom with shower etc. The first bedroom is off the entrance hall and has twin beds ( which can if required be made into a double ) . This room could also contain the childs bed or cot.
The second bedroom is also accessed from the hall and has a double bed. The third bedroom is accessed through the second bedroom and has a low stone arched ceiling and contains twin beds ( Which if required could be put together to form a double bed. These two bedrooms together make an ideal family room. The ground floor can be accessed by stair from the kitchen however it has its own entrance to the garden.
The bathroom on this level also contains the washing machine.
The second level contains the fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster etc. This level has the living / dining room with satellite TV and radio / DVD player. It also has an open fire.
The top level contains a further large double bedroom with two twin beds which again could be put together to form a double bed. There is also a further bathroom on this level with shower.
All the rooms in the house have electric room heaters.
Like all our holiday homes we provide weekly fresh linen and the final cleaning. The price includes all electric, cooking gas and wood for the fire.

 

The village house comprises 4 bedrooms in total; 1 double, 3 twin and 2 cots. . This gives room for up to 8 people. Bed linen and towels are provided for your use.

The village house has 2 bathrooms and 2 WCs for your party's use. Central heating keeps you snug and warm.

The village house has television video, dvd. The music system will play cds, radio.

There is room for 8 in the living room and 8 in the dining room. The open fire can be used to create a comfortable atmosphere. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

Smoking is allowed in this village house.
