The attractions of Nice
Nice is the capital and chief resort of the Riviera. It is a charming port city blessed with a number of cultural and recreational attractions. Visitors from around the world are drawn to its pebbly beaches and the narrow cobblestone streets of Vieux Nice (The old town), which sits up against the romantic hill, Colline du Chateau.
Nice benefits from pedestrianised traffic-free streets and you can stroll past quaint cafés, outdoor markets, and Latin-flavoured squares. The city is an architectural jewel (see The Architecture of Nice below) and there are numerous places to explore and the atmosphere is friendly and lively.
The Colline du Chateau has a charming park and gardens with Greek settlement ruins and a café. From each corner you get good skyline views of the city, the port and the Promenade Des Anglais. There is a lift to take you up as well as the stairs. Alternatively, you can take the touristic electric train which takes you through Vieux Nice and allows you to hope off at the Chateau and hope back on afterwards.
The Promenade des Anglais with it's trademark, the little blue chairs, is ideal for relaxing by the sea and offers an enchanting walk along the sea front. The weather in Nice is mild, the beaches are plentiful (and free), and the sun shines more than 300 days a year.
Nice's well-to-do residential suburb, Cimiez, is a walking distance from our flat and has more to recommend it than just a rarefied atmosphere. It's the site of the Roman capital, Semenelum, and there's an entire archaeological museum devoted to the area's ancient past. It's also the site of the impressive 16th century Monastère de Cimiez, a working monastery with a colorful history. Henri Matisse spent the last several winters of his life in Cimiez, and is buried in the monastery's graveyard, as is fellow artist Raoul Dufy. If you're a Matisse fan, don't miss the Matisse Museum just up the hill.
Nice is fond of public celebrations, so virtually at any time of year, you can participate in something unique. Perhaps the two most well-known events are the Nice Carnival in February, the top festival on the French Riviera, and the Nice Jazz Festival in July, which is held amid the gardens of the Cimiez Monastery. Others include La FÃte des Mais, the Semi-Marathon International de Nice 26-29 April, which is now the third most important half marathon in France, and Christmas & New Year in Nice. Please consult the town hall's list of events by clicking here for a events every month of the year.
All this makes Nice an incredibly popular destination, and the city hums with activity virtually all day and night, year round.
The Architecture of Nice
Much of the old town of Nice dates back to medieval times, and the city has been restored, especially in the parts of Rue du Pont Vieux and Rue de la Préfecture, to reflect this. Many of the shops feature the traditional “ogival arches,†while there are examples of stone lintels on the facades of private homes.
The le Palais de Justice law courts were built in a neo-classical style of the last century, and the courthouse occupies the Caserne Rusca, which served as former barracks. Combined this offer a window to the city’s past.
The former “Palais Royal,†Le Palais de la Préfecture was built in the 17th century for the governors and even Princes of Savoy for their visits to the city. After Nice was unified with France in 1860 the building became the headquarters of the Préfecture des Alpes-Maritimes.
The Rue Saint-François de Paule L’Opéra is a typical example of Second Empire architecture… despite the fact that it was actually built in 1885, after the former municipal theatre, which was on the same site, was destroyed in a fire in 1881. Built during the Third Republic, the building still follows the earlier design and is reminiscent of the era of the Emperor Napoleon III.
The style of Russia lives in the L'ÉGLISE RUSSE on the Boulevard du Tzarevitch, not far from the city’s center. First inaugurated in 1912, the Cathédrale Saint Nicolas is crowned by the distinctive onion-shaped domes, and it includes superb icons, woodwork and frescoes.
The massive 16th century fortress Le Fort du Mont Alban features bastions and watchtowers, which offer exceptional views of the French and even nearby Italian countryside. On a clear day some say you can almost see Corsica as well.
