Villa Monteserra
Inside:
The villa is built on three floors. The top two are interconnected and available for rental while the lower one is occasionally occupied by the owner. The whole villa has only recently been refurbished to a very high standard and the top two apartments can comfortably accommodate up to ten people.

Apartment 1 is located on the 1st floor. The apartment can comfortably sleep six people. There are two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, one twin room and a further separate bathroom. The spacious living room has a working open fireplace, TV, etc. There is a fully equipped, eat-in kitchen. Meals can also be taken on the extensive terrace with its spectacular views down to Catania and the coast for a real 'al fresco' dining experience.

Apartment 2 is located on the top (2nd) floor and can comfortably sleep 4 people. There is a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and the spacious lounge has a double sofa bed so can easily convert into a sleeping area. The kitchen in the upper apartment is small but has all the essential appliances and like the lower apartment has its own roof terrace, ideal for 'al fresco' dining with first class views.

Apartment 1 and 2 share an entrance and are designed to be rented out together, although the lower apartment (Apartment 1) can be rented in isolation.

The ground floor apartment is occasionally occupied by the owner.

Outside:
As well as the terraces, the villa has a large garden and a superbly sited, well-sized swimming pool. As well as an outside changing area (with WC and two hot showers), there are plenty of pool-side loungers and chairs. In addition, there is a pagoda, which provides a shaded area for pool-side breakfasts and picnics.

Due to the villa being situated on the slopes of Etna, at about 500m above sea level, a cooling breeze is almost guaranteed during the hot Italian summer.

The pool and garden area are very private and back on to olive groves. Therefore, the property really does allow you to feel far from the madding crowd.

Practically speaking, unless you plan to stay put in the villa for the duration of your holiday, you will need a rental car to
get the most from your holiday.
What to do?
The villa, its views, the garden and the pool offer tranquil surrounds and are perfect for a relaxing family or group holiday.

If you don’t want to, there is no need to venture far with the local town and its markets offering a full range of eating and shopping possibilities. There are pleasant bars, pizzerias, restaurants, market stores and supermarkets all within easy reach (1km). In fact, you are ideally situated to enjoy the ‘buon gusti’ of Sicily and more specifically the fruits of the fertile Etna soil.

In the immediate environs, there are a number of ‘Etnean’ towns where you can find typical restaurants that will offer whatever is in season and there are a number of regional wines to be enjoyed. When you see the word ‘tipici’ in this area, it really does mean typical as well, not something made up for tourists. The nearby towns have a very safe feel and pleasant evenings can be spent strolling among the locals in the beautiful piazzas while sampling Sicilian specialities, eating italian ice cream or trying your first ever granita (rarely the last).

Alternatively, you can head down to the dramatic Etna coast and enjoy the catch of the day while watching the fishing boats come in and out of port. There are some fascinating lidos where you can enter the crystal clear seas direct from the unique volcanic coastline or you can head to the beaches further south.

There is also a wide range of other outdoor activities available. If just visiting the crater of Europe’s largest active volcano isn’t enough (tours can be arranged), Etna also offers some fantastic walking and biking opportunities. During the “winter” months, Etna can also provide the full range of alpine activities and, of course, the sea is only about 20 minutes drive away. Essentially, however adventurous you feel ,there is something to match, whether it’s paragliding or eating your first sea urchin.

Catania’s fantastic climate and non-stop sunshine means it is a year-round destination and it is not unknown for more hardy holidaymakers to be skiing one day and swimming in the sea beneath blue skies the next.

The city itself has an amazing history and some fantastic architecture. Greek and Roman remains litter the centre of town while the cathedral, university and opera house form the main part of the old town, which acts as a hub to the town’s vibrant nightlife.

Unsurprisingly, the coastline is also a favourite destination of the Catanese at night time and it would be a shame not to join in at least once by taking a late night stroll and visit the bars and pasticceria’s in Aci Trezza or by the castle in Aci Castello.

During the day, the enormous outdoor market in Catania host sights and smells unique to the area and down by the port there is one of biggest fish markets in southern Italy.

Further afield, it is possible to visit Sicily’s most famous sights. Taormina, Syracusa, Agrigento and Piazza Armerina are all within striking distance and even Palermo is only about three hours drive away through Sicily’s interior.

The choice is yours and, as your hosts, we are more than happy to answer any question you may have on specific sporting activities/attractions you would like to do or see. We can also recommend the best local restaurants and offer tips on how best to spend your time in the area.
