Discovering Sicily and its people
Vallelunga: By encouraging visitors to Inland Sicily away from the overdeveloped stretches of the Sicilian coastline, we hope we can play a part in assisting the local economy, and spread the word about this wonderful region its people and its culture.
Vallelunga and its surrounding villages:
A fascinating overview of old rural life is offered at the Museo della Civiltà Contadina (museum of the rural life), harboring beautifully detailed reconstructions of rural homes and artisan’s workshops. All of this is a mere 15.min walk from Villa Caterina where guest will be able to mix with the local people and experiace the true Sicilian way of living. Visit the impressing naturalistic sites, such as the Collina di Tanarizzi and the Regaleali estate; the latter is property of the Counts Tasca d’Almerita, its vines having contributed to producing most prestigious Sicilian wines.
Agrigento: The Valley of The Temples, The temples are spread along a rocky ridge a short way to the south of the medieval town centre, in a designated archaeological park. Food options are limited so you might wish to take a picnic lunch. A more recent tourist sight is the childhood home of writer Luigi Pirandello (Six Characters in Search of an Author), which has been turned into a museum. His Casa Natale can be visited in the brilliantly-named suburb of Caos. From Villa Caterina to this most Historic of places is a mere 1hours drive away, where you will be transported back to ancient times.
Caltanissetta is much frequented by tourists, notably over Easter period, here celebrated with a series of long-waited events such as two processions taking place on Maundy Wednesday and Thursday – this one known as the Procession delle Vare. The city offers sites of both historical and naturalistic interest as well as a much appreciated cuisine where especially renowned is the sweet almond torrone. Driving to Caltanissetta is a day out in its self .

The Mafia Connection... {A full Day out}
Corleone is set in the island’s hilly interior, south of Palermo. Not only does the central character, Don Corleone (played by Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro) take his name from the town, but it is also the surname of Sicily's most feared mafia family. Unfortunately for the town the filmmakers felt Corleone was too developed to be used as a location. None the less, the town has strong historical links with the mafia - it was the scene of 153 violent deaths between 1944 and 1948. It has been home to some of the mafia's most notorious leaders for many years, including Salvatore Riina, who was finally arrested in 1993 and charged with being responsible for more than 150 murders.

Visit the Bar Vitelli
Just as you enter the village you will see the Bar Vitelli, where Michael discusses his proposed marriage to Apollonia with her father, the owner of the bar, aptly named Vitelli in the film. It is a pretty, 18th-century stone-flagged building, draped in climbing plants with a vine-covered terrace looking out over a deep valley. Much is as in the movie, even down to the curtains over the door. Inside, the partially paneled bar has a small display of photos, press cuttings and mementos from the making of the film.

Review submitted by non-Villarenters customer: This September the Eccles family and friends, took off to Sicily, to stay in the wonderful town of Vallelunga, about 1½ hours drive west of Catania. For two whole weeks we enjoyed lovely sunshine, (85+F) everyday, fresh air, and belt buckle bending food. We met the most friendliest of people, and learnt that most of the men of the town are called Nino!
Although for the majority of the fortnight consisted of lazing around, making decisions over numerous cups of coffee and cigarettes, we did some work. Grape picking for the day from the Villa's own vinyard to make over 400 litres of wine, ready to drink on our next visit, visiting some of the spectacular scenery of the island, but must of all, just sitting around, doing nothing apart from the odd decision making of course!
Night times would consist of ear splitting italian converstions, (BabyEccles manged to sleep through the highest of decibels known to mankind!), drinking the most fantastic wine 68cents could buy, and of course eating the freshest, most delicious home made food that has ever been laid in front of me.
Entertainment was as a treat, watching the odd tractor go past carrying a trailor full of the seasons grape crops, the bells of the sheep as the were gathered in each night, chase the ace was a firm favourite with some, but most of all the decision making was always taken very seriously. Mr. Mrs. Eccles & Friends
