Fontemaggio is a 17th century stone farmhouse villa or 'Casa Colonica' on a hillside, surrounded by 2 acres of mature landscaped gardens that merge into the sunflowers, vines, olives, pine and cypress trees beyond. There are terraces on all sides, each with its own dining table and breathtaking views of a landscape that seems to have changed little throughout the centuries, including a lake and a Renaissance castle on a hill. Sympathetically restored, the house retains a wealth of terracotta floors and chestnut beams. The 30ft diameter circular pool, surrounded by fragrant rosemary hedging and lemon trees, benefits from the sun for the entire day. Set amongst mature pines, cypress and olives, it enjoys tranquil views of the Tuscan and Umbrian hills in complete seclusion. The medieval hilltop village of Monterchi, featured in a recent publication 'The Most Beautiful Villages in Tuscany' is close by. The local village of Monterchi is in the historic and desirable S.E. corner of Tuscany near the border with Umbria and is therefore an ideal location for visiting the key attractions of both regions: Arezzo 20 mins, Cortona 35 mins, Perugia and Gubbio 40 mins, Assisi: 45 mins, Florence, Siena, San Gimignagno: 1 hour. Within easy reach of several international and budget line airports and motorway routes. 

The gardens and grounds have been professionally landscaped and contain planting typical of Tuscany. Trees include some very old pines and almonds, cypresses, olives, acacias, oaks, figs and lemons in terracotta pots. There are box, lavender and rosemary hedges. The terraces have pergolas covered in vines, wisteria, Chilean bell-flowers, and roses climb on the house walls. A wisteria entwined tiled loggia provides a shady retreat and alternative place to dine. The tranquil sound of running water is provided by a fountain.
Although private and peaceful, Fontemaggio (the name translates as 'spring that arises in May')is not remote. It is well placed to either luxuriate in the excellent cuisine and wines of the region or take trips to the historical and cultural sites of both Tuscany and Umbria. The timeless hill top village of Lippiano, crowned by the castle that can be viewed from Fontemaggio, may be walked to for breakfast or a drink at the friendly bar. 3km away, the local hilltop walled village of Monterchi, a tiny triangle of medieval perfection, with its intriguing arches and alleyways, is Roman in origin. It is the birthplace of the mother of the famous Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca. His fresco the Madonna del Parto can be seen in the old schoolhouse museum. The landscape that appears in Piero's works is clearly recognisable in the views around Fontemaggio.

You will find the local community in Monterchi welcoming and friendly, particularly at the general store which sells all the essentials. There are a post office, bars and good restaurants serving local specialities. There is a market on Sunday mornings and in the summer there are delightful outdoor concerts in the garden of the museum. Florence, Siena, Cortona, Arezzo, Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio are all within easy reach. 

The farm house comprises 4 bedrooms in total; 3 double, 1 twin and 1 cots, 3 of the bedrooms with en-suite facilities. . This gives room for up to 8 people. Bed linen and towels are provided for your use.

The farm house has 3 bathrooms and 4 WCs for your party's use. Central heating keeps you snug and warm.

The farm house has television video, dvd, satellite/cable. The music system will play cassettes, cds, radio.

There is room for 8 in the living room and 8 in the dining room. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

The farm house is in a very quiet area. It has a private south facing swimming pool, a south facing garden, a south facing patio area, panoramic views, interesting views, a barbeque. If you are driving there is private parking with the outside areas of the house having external lighting.

Close to the farm house you will find fishing, horse riding, golf, tennis, historic sites, a museum, a theatre/cinema, shopping areas, a restaurant, a food shop.

Review submitted by non-Villarenters customer: Five friends and I rented this country house in October 2008 and were completely enthralled. It exceeded our expectations in every way. As it was two of our birthdays, with the assistance of the owner, we hired local cooks to come in and prepare a special dinner. It was spectacular and was a highlight of our trip to Italy. The house is a beautifully restored stone farmhouse, and the grounds are lovingly maintained. After having our capuccino and brioche on the vine-covered terrace, overlooking the remarkable Tuscan countryside, it was hard to leave to make a day-trip into a nearby hilltown. If you are looking for a place to be creative, to decompress, for a honeymoon, or a base to explore Tuscany and Umbria, consider staying here. It is very special, and I want to come back again and again. Be advised that it is on a steep gravel road and there are many steps in the house and on the property.
