The history of the village Aquilea can be traced back to the roman empire times , the name Aquilea probably comes from the roman lord ruling the area. The village was wealthy and populated in the middle age it belonged to the "vescovo " or bishop of Lucca , around year 1000 a castle which ruins are still visible was built .
The village is located in the first hills of the Garfagnana valley great place to hike, horse riding or just to enjoy a day in the mountains tasting local food and wine.
10 Km. away there is Lucca beatiful and rich town with its peculiar ring of 15th century walls . From Lucca an hour drive ( or train ride ) will take you to Florence or Chiantishire , Pisa is 45 minutes away. Viareggio and the Versilia are 30 km away for those who wants the fun and the night life of the seaside holiday resorts.
