Through KossdalPassthe road was built by clearing rock-strewn slopes and using the rocks to build high stone walls on both sides. The road has 17 curves and a maximum inclination of 27%.The construction of the road was started in 1885 to replace an older and more difficult trail through the pass.
11. Cultural Heritage: Ole Bull’s house - contact S. Edvardsdal tel: 56 39 44 22
Ole Bull played an important rôle in Norwegian cultural history. He was a violinist and composer and was well-known both in Norwayand abroad. He is considered one of the best violinists of his time. His distinctive characteristic was that he let himself be inspired by different cultures and traditions and seems to have been especially inspired by folk music. It is said that “Ole Bull with his candour and interest had a colossal influence on the development of folk music”. The fact that a celebrity like Ole Bull showed interest in this kind of music was an inspiration for others. His fascination with the unique traits of other cultures inspired not only his music.
Ole Bull was more than a musician - he was also an active and influential gentleman in the community. In 1850 he founded The Norwegian Theater which later became The National Stage in Bergen. He tried to create an idealistic community in Oleana, Pennsylvaniain 1852. This project failed and he lost a lot of money. Ole Bull was also a great source of inspiration to the Grieg family and to the development of Edvard Grieg’s musical talents.
(When Edvard Grieg came home from his music studies in Germany, Ole Bull thought that he had become too ”German” and took him to Osterøy to “norwegianize” him again by listening to Norwegian folk music.)
12.Theme Park/ Gallery: Art trail/Gallery Mjøsvågen in Hosanger, contact Else-Karin Bysheim. Tel: 56 39 31 52.
13. Herlandsfoss Kraftverk AS: This electrical power station, earlier called HerlandsfossKommunale Kraftverk (HKK), was founded in 1916 and by 1920 had completed the development of Herlandsvassdraget. Almost 400 people were employed here during this period. The reservoirs were Storavatnet and Løtveitvatnet. A turning point for the people of Osterøy was Christmas 1920 when the electric lights finally could be turned on at a cost of 8 crowns per 100 watts.
The oldest and largest building looks like a large stone church from earlier days. This beautiful building, which was chosen as the symbol for Osterøy"s cultural heritage in 1997, was made into a museum in 1995.
To the right in the picture is the new power plant building which was completed in 1995. This is a beautiful state-of-the- art building entirely clad in granite. Herlands Komunale Kraftverk was privatized in 1998 and changed its name to Herlandsfoss Kraftverk AS.
