About the House and the Area
Villa Garrod is a new three bed two bath link detached villa, situated at one of the highest points in the quiet Gata Residencia near Gata de Gorgos. The Residencia is about 5 miles inland as the crow flies, and is close to the towns of Javea, Denia, and Moraira. A car is essential, as the Residencia is built on top of a hill, and does not have shops / restaurants etc within walking distance.
About the House
The house is built on three levels to take advantage of the hillside location. The ground floor has a large lounge/dining room, with facilities for 6 people. French doors open onto the patio area. The fully opening windows also have insect screens integrated into the frame, allowing you to keep the windows open with the breeze flowing through, without sharing with insects! We have also installed two ceiling fans for maximum comfort in the hot weather. A working open fire can also be used if evenings are chilly, and for the colder months, the house has mains gas central heating..
For entertainment, there is a Stereo CD/Cassette player, DVD player, a TV, and a bookcase full of paperbacks. The TV is connected to satellite, but is limited to Sky news, Bloomberg and a couple of other English Channels. However you can access a couple of hundred other channels from many different countries!
Also on the ground floor, the kitchen is a good size, with white units, granite worktops, a big double sink, fridge/freezer, electric oven and gas hob with an extractor fan. There is a good range of kitchen equipment including a coffee filter machine, and stainless steel juicer – to take full advantage of the local oranges. A storage cupboard under the stairs holds the clothes driers and ironing board. A glass door leads to the adjoining utility area where the washing machine and combination boiler are sited. There is also another sink This is a good area for clothes drying.
Up one level is the front door, a double bedroom and the shower room. The double bedroom has built in wardrobes, bedside tables and lamps, a chest of drawers, mirror and a big ceiling fan. The shower room next door has a corner shower, sink and toilet. There are also plugs for shavers and hairdryers next to a large mirror.
On the top floor is a twin bedroom with two single beds, and the master suite. The twin bedroom has built in wardrobes, a bedside table, lamp and a ceiling fan.
The master suite is through its own doorway which can be closed at night for complete privacy. There is a separate dressing area with two large built in wardrobes. The bedroom holds a king size bed, with bedside table and lamps, a chest of drawers, a portable TV and a ceiling fan. It also has French windows leading to a private balcony, from which the views of the mountains and the sea are wonderful. The en-suite bathroom has a shower, bath, bidet and toilet as well as plugs for shaver & hairdryers.
The patio area has tables and chairs. You can sit and look down the valley to the sea at Javea, and the mountains are all around. The site also overlooks the town of Gata de Gorgos. As the house is south facing, the patio area gets the sun all day. On summer nights, the patio is a lovely place to sit with a drink, looking at the lights of Gata and the surrounding area.
The communal pool is close to the rear of the house – 30 seconds walk. Our pool has a freshwater shower, a paved surround, and a spectacular view of Montgo mountain.
Shopping
There is a decent sized ‘Mas y Mas’ Supermarket on the N332. This can be reached by driving down to the N332 junction at the Bricoman store and turning left onto the N332. The supermarket is approx 0.5km on the right. Fresh milk is sold here, as well as fresh bread. There is a good selection of fresh fish and meat.
An English Supermarket can be found further down the N332 next to the Denia turnoff.
Denia has other large supermarkets, including a ‘Capbrabo’ and a ‘Mercadona’. Denia town is a great general shopping centre, with a beautiful tree lined main road with lots of bars and restaurants. Fresh fish and shellfish can be bought from the fishing port.
If you want to use the open fire, wood is readily available at many Garages. There is also a roadside wood seller on the Javea road.
Beaches
Denia has a long sandy beach. Best for children is the sheltered Arenal Beach at Javea which also has a good selection of Bars and Restaurants. Moraira has a shingle beach. Whichever you choose, you are always within reach of a beach bar.
Sightseeing
There is a lot to see within 1 hours drive. Inland is the fortified hilltop village of Guadalest, a famous landmark of the Costa Blanca. We have been several times, and still find it a fascinating day out. The mountain roads around the area are also pleasant, for a sightseeing drive, passing through old towns and villages and with superb scenery.
The Jalon Valley is also very pretty. Look for the Bodega on the outskirts of Jalon where 5 litres of wine costs 8 euro’s and you get to try before you buy.
On the coast, Denia Castle is worth a trip, with great views of the town and the port from the castle walls. Montgo mountain also has walks up its fairly steep seaward face.
The two local Capes, Cap de la Nau, and Cap St Antoni offer great walks and views of the mountains and sea.
Another famous landmark is the Penyon d’Ifach at Calpe. This can be climbed (not by the fainthearted) for spectacular views of the surrounding area. Look for the Salt flats which has a flock of Flamingo’s in residence. Calpe old town is very picturesque, and the promenade walk from the Penyon to the town passes Roman ruins on the seaward side.
For the children – apart from the beaches – is the Terra Mitica theme park on the outskirts of Benidorm (well signposted off the motorway) and also a Safari Park at Verger, approx 20 minutes heading north on the N332.
Eating out
So many, it’s hard to recommend. At the entrance to Monte Pedreguer is Monroes Carvery (English owned and run). This is the closest restaurant to the house. For an upmarket meal in lovely traditional surroundings try the Taberna Antigua on the Denia turnoff of the N332 (about 10 mins from the house).
Next to the port at Calpe, are several fantastic fish and shellfish restaurants. They display their dishes outside the restaurant and give you a free glass of Sangria whilst you make up your mind.
Most of the local Restaurants we have visited have been reasonable prices with a good menu. We have found that the House Wines are always acceptable.

Paul says: "Villa excellent size and well looked after inside.
Unfortunately the villa next door housed three large dogs, who were kept in the confined space of the laundry area behind their kitchen. The heat from the sun caused the smell from these dogs to waft through the corridor and meant that it was not a pleasant experience spending time on the front terrace, as a result we kept the patio doors shut and spent more time at the beach for example during the day rather than than we would have liked.
Basically an excellent villa with great views but spoilt by the smell from next doors dogs."
