There are two local coffee shops in the square which also serve snacks and the traditional souvlaki. There is also another pub/bar in walking distance and a small post-office and two churches. Enjoy walking through the village with its cobbled narrow alleyways and stone tower houses.
The nearest beach is pebbled and is just a few minutes by car. Car hire, by the way, can be arranged as transport is essential due to there being only a couple of buses to and from Areopolis per day. All you have to do, is contact us by telephone or e.mail.
Kotronas, which is a picturesque resort, has the view which can be seen from the studio/room. It is a lovely fishing village and also has the traditional, typical stone-tower houses. If you enjoy fishing or yachting then this is the place for you. It was once the sight of ancient Tenthroni. There is a cafeteria on the sea-front where you can try freshly cooked octopus (meze) and drink ouzo.
Areopolis, which is about 13km away, is an old small town which one cant afford not to visit. Take the north-east road if you want to go to the town. It is situated in the heart of the Mani. There are a few excellent tavernas and small stone authentic shops. It is unique in itself as its part of one of the most historic regions. Its enjoyable to walk around the old part of the town with its cobbled alleyways and paths. Its the nearest place for shopping and you ll find quant little shops built from stone.
On the outskirts of Areopolis there is a sandy beach/shingle which is very popular with the locals.
Visiting the Caves of Dirou are a must! They are said to be the most famous caves in Europe and are quite magnificent! Treat yourself to a day out. Its easy to get to by car, about 15km away. As you travel along the winding roads, you can feel a sense of nostalgia and you can feel the silent atmosphere in the depth of the nearby mountains. Its a feeling which is almost difficult to describe.
Local farmers can be seen out in the wilderness tending cattle and goats. They often have to water the animals far up into the mountains usually on foot or by donkey. Very often elderly women can be seen doing this and sitting or walking next to a donkey with a heavy work load.
Recently, a new road has been built which passes on the outskirts of the Mani. It takes you around the mountains and one can enjoy the peaceful environment with the sea and unbelievable, amazing panoramic views of the landscape.
Githio is a town which boasts a picturesque harbour. There are many tavernas and restaurants which serve traditional Greek dishes and fresh fish including lobster, shrimps, and octopus- a must!
The Mani.
In the Greek language 'Mani' comes from the adjective 'manos' and means barren-like, sparse with no trees. The land of stone, sea, mountains and sun.
Landscapes, cosy bays, fig and olive trees. The Mani, so proud and unique-like a country on its own. Its strong dwellings that are built like towers. The natural settlements a mixture from Sparta, Byzantium, Venetian, and Roman as well as from The Turks and The Franks. Three and four-storey towers made from stone with a unique Greek style. One room built on top of another with tiny windows.
The Towers themselves were built in the 15th. century-stone of various colours and sizes. Today, the Mani people continue to build in stone and try to keep up with this tradition. New houses are gradually going-up, one by one and old ruins are being restored.
The settlements and dwellings are surrounded by many churches which have rich architecture- designed beautifully and delicately with amazing detail. The many tiny villages are surrounded by mountains and barren-fields, unusual buildings and homes which still have a cave-like appearance. Some of the settlements, many of them deserted, can be found on top of the mountains and one wonders how the remaining villagers who live there, ever manage to leave their homes, when one sees the ever-lasting lonely tracks which lead down to the road. The Mani with its breath-taking landscapes and winding narrow roads. Its intriguing atmosphere which lingers over the blue seas and winds. The never never land of tranquility and deep silence for poets and artists.
For those who seek yet another kind of world!
In so many words, its just.... Out of this world!
History of the Mani.
When one talks about the resistence of Greece and the Peloponnese, one is really talking about the independance of the Maniates; for it were these brave people who never ever accepted defeat . Firstly from the Ottomens and Venetians and afterwards the Turks just before the Greek civil war of independence. However, The Mani was the only part of the Peloponnese that never really fell under the rule of any other government or country, although it had been a sovereign state within a state, for six years. During Roman times, it took part in the league for 'free laconians' and throughout history, it was the only region in Greece that retained its liberation apart for a short while (1249-1262) in the hands of the Franks during the Venetian rule. When in 1460 Mistras also fell under the Turks, The Mani remained untouched and the Turkish did not set foot in their territory. They resisted and did not give-in. Instead they were given privileges and had their own internal government. They were allowed to use arms and the people of the land did not leave. In fact, the population grew. Numerous refugees flocked in and Military forces were present, due to disputes over not having enough room to accommodate large numbers.
The Mani became an international interest due to the location of the region and mercenaries were sought from the strong Maniates, to fight along with the West. Pirate ships could be seen roaming the rough seas.
During the 17th.century, there were continuous wars between Turkey and the Venetians. Eventually, Turkey got the upper-hand in 1715. During18th.mid- century, northern Mani joined -in and prospered with the economic growth of the Peloponnese, whereas southern Mani suffered, enduring many conflicts due to the land being infertile and due to the lack of space and growing numbers. Unlike the rest of Greece and the rest of the Peloponnese, it was not able to progress.
In 1782-1797, Githio became alive once more. Trade was at its best and Greece was ready for the 'War of Independence'.
Petrobey Mavromichalis who was governing at the time, was amongst those that fought and proclaimed the revolution at Areopolis on March the 17th in 1821.The Maniates, experienced and strong as ever, fought a brave fight and helped with the struggle. They later resisted the Bavarians when King Otto was in power and eventually in 1870, there was peace at last.
As the life and economy began to change, inhabitants started to leave and emigrate to many different parts of the world. However, the traditions, customs and culture of the Mani remained and is still the same today-with its wild, attractive, beauty.
