Herault holiday rental village house details
Welcome to L’Hirondelle, 3 Rue de la Place, Combejean
L‘Hirondelle is a tastefully renovated, three hundred year old house in the small hamlet of Combejean, close to Saint Chinian in the Languedoc-Roussillon. It is a very bright and comfortably furnished home that will sleep four. It has a fully equipped modern kitchen, separate dining room that will seat four and a living room with TV/DVD. There are two double bedrooms, the main room, on the first floor having a toilet/shower room attached. The large basement bedroom is accessed from beyond the dining room down some steps. On the ground floor, past the kitchen and dining room, there is a large bathroom with separate shower.
At the top of the house, steps lead out to the roof terrace, which has lovely views over the rooftops and beyond to the surrounding hills. This is a lovely spot to relax and soak up the sun on the sun beds provided. It is totally secluded, with only the house martins to keep an eye on you!
L’Hirondelle is not really suitable for very young children or the elderly/infirm. Being an old house, there are stairs and steps to contend with.
A car is advisable as Combejean is ideally situated to explore the many varied and interesting sites in this largely unexplored part of France.
St Chinian
A short drive or a twenty-minute walk takes you into the village of Saint Chinian. Tucked into the foothills of the Montagne de L’Espinouse, with the dramatic tabletop of Le Caroux as a backdrop, Saint Chinian is the centre for the wide range of quality wines being produced in the surrounding area. After many years turning out vast quantities of mediocre wine, in the middle of the 20th century the vignerons began to concentrate on quality rather than quantity. Today, having acquired AOC status in 1982, Saint Chinian wines are quite rightly appreciated throughout the world.
The village has excellent, twice weekly markets held in the tree-lined square, where you can buy locally grown produce, souvenirs, household goods and clothing. With five restaurants, bars, a supermarket, banks, butchers, bakers and newspaper shop you really should have no need to travel further afield.
During the summer months there are a huge choice of activities in the village and surrounding area, with wine and food tasting, concerts, outdoor banquets and petanque competitions. Join in, the local people are very friendly and welcoming.
For those who love:
Walking - plenty of local paths and tracks just outside Combejean if you don’t want to use the car. But head north and into the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc and you will really be spoilt for choice. Do your homework and discover the Grandes Routes going through the National Park, the GR 7 going through Lamalou-les-Bains, for example.
Wildlife - for those who are knowledgeable, red and black kites, short-toed eagles, buzzards, hoopoes, bee-eaters, nightingales, and of course, swallows and house martins are in abundance. Snakes and friendly lizards and even if you don’t manage to see sanglier (wild boar) you will most certainly see their tracks.
Food - well, we are in France! Cassoulet, magret de canard, foie gras confit, wonderful seafood and salads. Rick Stein seemed to be impressed with the food on his “French Odyssey” along the Canal du Midi, which passes close by.
Sporting activities - swimming in rivers, cycling, horse-riding, kayaking/canoeing, rafting and climbing are all readily available locally, whilst a 40 minute drive to the Mediterranean beaches gives access to numerous water sports, such as sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing.
History - through prehistory and Tautavel Man, Roman ruins and Cathar castles, there is much to explore and learn.
